I spent most of my teenaged years in and out of hospital, and left school feeling socially awkward and shy. Books were my one true friend; I clammed up in social situations, and became the stereotypical wallflower.
I still have days like that, where I watch people talking and wonder how they manage to make small talk, and not just sit there waiting for the other person to speak, but fandom is what gave me the confidence to start talking to people.
And, OMG, you saw Arcade Fire live?! *is jealous*
