When I decided to study folklore this was sort of the secret I was trying to unlock. Us/Them. Self/Other. How we create alienation and togetherness. I was inspired because of Bill Ellis's book Aliens, Ghosts, and Cults: Legends We Live, which discusses the phenomenon at some length of creating a oneness by uniting against a common enemy.

If we're going to exploit that particular trait of humanity, I sure wish we could unite really hard against enemies like, I dunno, global warming, or world hunger, or cancer, or...
