The sense of loss. Of fathers gone to war, never to return, as Vera Lynn sang "we'll meet again..." but we never did.

I think of Old Dean Moriarty, the father we never found...

When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.

A vision of the lost lane-end into heaven, something we thought we knew or felt as children and if we could only grab hold of it, remember it clearly, the pearl would be handed to us at last.

I turned to look but it was gone.

we cannot look at it directly, but little things
a stone, a leaf, an unfound door
a madeleine dipped in tea
can provide tantalizing glimpses, always frustraingly out of reach

I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.

Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone?
