Last night we were out at the Metropolitan Opera, watching "Falstaff". It was actually really funny, although pretty cheesy as operas usually are. Black widows--bad.
Brown recluses--bad.
Other spiders--bad because they're not venomous, they still have the potential for serious harm because they're so creepy, and you hurt yourself while precipitately removing your person from the immediate vicinity. This, as you mentioned, is especially bad when driving a vehicle.
I once was zooming along when I suddenly noticed a plump black spider tucked into the crevice along my windshield and door.
I think about 20 Hail Marys and 30 Our Fathers went up as I tucked myself as far back in my seat as possible and turned into the nearest store parking lot (carefully as did not want to agitate spider.)
I parked, eased myself out with both eyes glued on the spider for any sudden movements, and beat the guts out of him with a notebook. I can't imagine what this looked like to the people driving past...

On the second incident, only the safety belt saved me from throwing myself out of the vehicle when we stopped at a red light. I couldn't get it off in time, so I sat stiff as a board and hyperventilating until we finally got home. Incredibly enough, the husband didn't notice, other than "oh, that's why you were so quiet suddenly"...
