Van had never understood just what this ‘home work’ Hitomi mentioned in their conversations was. He’d thought it was work around one’s home, such as cleaning or cooking, but Hitomi had explained that those were ‘chores.’
Perhaps it was because the schooling system in Fanelia was not as stringent with at-home assignments as it were, with their students being taught everything in the school itself, because at home, the ‘chores’ that Hitomi kept describing encompassed far more than the upkeep of the house - children from a young age were brought into the family business, after all.
And Van thought that this way far surpassed the way schooling appeared to work on the Mystic Moon. You never heard of a citizen of Fanelia killing themselves just because of school! Needless to say, once Van heard that particular story all he wished to do was rush over to the Mystic Moon and take Hitomi away right then and there - but she’d reminded him that if she’d survived the stress of the Great War, reading was certainly not going to kill her.
But if there was one thing that Van did not understand, and strongly disliked, was that this ‘home work’ - and Hitomi’s school - only served to keep her away from him! If she was busy with the ‘home work’ she couldn’t talk to him, and while she reassured him that she loved him, Hitomi had stated emphatically that she was not leaving the Mystic Moon until ‘graduation’ - whatever that was.
For now, he’d wheedle her into conversations, and remind her that she’d said he was more important than this ‘home work.’
He only had to wait a few more months. And then he’d be able to see her face-to-face, and hold her.
And kiss her, which he always regretted having never done.
