Van had never wanted to kill someone so much in his life.
Nevermind Folken, who had betrayed family and country, and Dilandau, who seemed to thrive on the blood of others, but Van hadn't felt this much rage outside of battle before.
They'd kissed.
Kissed.
He hadn't been able to watch, had turned away and left nearly as soon as he'd glimpsed it. Had seen red through the haze of tears.
But instead of sorrow, his reaction to that kiss had been rage. He'd felt horrible, later on, when Hitomi had asked him what was wrong and he'd brushed her off. Could scarcely bring himself to look at Allen, who he knew - he knew - was an ally he couldn't afford to lose.
He'd pushed it out of his mind, had forgotten about it when he'd brought Hitomi back, when he'd seen the light in her eyes and would have kissed her had he built up the nerve... and the light swept them away.
But now, in this moment, the stillness before the inevitable collison of the guymelefs, Van brought that kiss to mind again, embraced that rage as he fought the one person he couldn't help but resent.
He scarcely heard Hitomi's screams for him, and would later remember that he'd though she was concerned only for Allen.
In the stillness he was blind to everything but the rage that demanded he destroy this usurper, this thief that had kept him from what he held dear.
Van told himself he wouldn't be good enough until he'd beat the man that had held his love entranced for so long.
He had to. He couldn't have realised that Hitomi didn't need the 'good enough.'
She already thought he was perfect.
