Van dreamed.
His dreams were not the premonitions that his wife used to be known for, nor the dreams of fields and endless skies that Merle had once confided in him.
No, strangely, Van's dreams - on the whole - were pleasant, though he could never quite remember them when he woke. The feeling of contentment would be fleeting, until he looked beside him to see Hitomi often still asleep, curled up and leaning into him.
But sometimes...
Sometimes the dreams were skies of grey smoke, flashes of light, and that inescapable heat, that Van wishes he could forget - but can't, because that was Fanelia, that was his country, his fault.
Hitomi has always tried to tell him otherwise. But it's never worked.
But he takes these dreams of fire as a sign of penance, as a way to remind himself why he is going to rebuild his country to be better, stronger than before, as a testament to those who had been lost.
The fire only came when he questioned his own devotion to this cause, after days of anguish, or large setbacks.
And if he ever dreamed that he'd lost Hitomi in that first fire, so long ago, to the screams in his head and the shouts from Balgus...
A movement would wake him before he could dwell. And her smile would banish the vestiges of the dream away.
