Character History:
Wiki. Twilight Sparkle is a unicorn pony who comes from the "capitol" city of the world of Equestria, Canterlot. This is the home of the Princess Celestia, ruler of Equestria, and is considered as a royal city. Twilight was, and still is Celestia's most favored student and personally studied under her. Twilight mainly focused on research and studying everything involving their world-from the history to legends to magic, with magic being Twilight's specialty. She also has an assistant and friend, Spike the purple baby dragon, who helps magically deliver messages from and to Celestia.
It was actually during one of her research "projects" when she realized the true danger of Nightmare Moon. It was before the Summer Sun Celebration, and Twilight had seen the signs that Nightmare Moon-who had been sealed in the moon by Celestia 1000 years ago-would break free on the day of the celebration. While others only thought of it as just a fairy tale, Twilight took it seriously, and tried to find information about the one thing that could stop Nightmare Moon-the Elements of Harmony. However, when she informed Celestia of her own opinions and warnings, Twilight was instead sent to Ponyville to check on the preparations for the celebration and to make friends.
This greatly confused her at first. For one, she couldn't believe that Celestia would not take her seriously, and for two, at the time she didn't see how making friends would help solve the problem. She was more focused about the issue at hand that any type of social interaction was thought of as unnecessary. Thus, she vowed to not only complete the check-up, but also try and find more about the Elements of Harmony. Throughout the day, she met the ponies who would later become her future close friends: Pinkie Pie (informally), Fluttershy, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity. Though Twilight was hesitant to become more than just acquaintances with the ponies, when Nightmare Moon did appear during the Summer Sun Celebration and hid Celestia away, they would join together to try and save her.
Their journey through the Everfree Forest gave Twilight the insight she needed to figure out what the Elements of Harmony were. During the final confrontation with Nightmare Moon, Twilight had been separated from the group. But when the others came looking for her and she heard their voices, she realized that they all represented the Elements of Harmony. She recalled the various trials all of them had to go through.
Applejack stood for Honesty. Fluttershy was Kindness. Pinkie Pie was Laughter. Rarity was Generosity. Rainbow Dash was Loyalty. And Twilight Sparkle represented the element of Magic.
Combined, all six of them were able to defeat Nightmare Moon and release Celestia. After returning to Ponyville, Twilight realized that she was happy to have made such friends, and was delighted when Celestia told her that she should remain in Ponyville to continue learning about friendship-an assignment she was more happy to do.
Thus, Twilight made Ponyville her new home and continued to not only hang out and help her friends, but also learn what it means to be a friend.
Of all the episodes released so far (to her canon point), these are the lessons she had learned:
It's better to share with everyone what you have. In the situation involving having to choose who to take with her to Grand Galloping Gala, Twilight was unable to choose one pony out of all five of her friends. Therefore, in the end she chose to sacrifice her own ticket so that she would be unable to go and instead spend time with her friends. She learned that it's much better if all of her friends could participate in something they all wanted to do rather than try to pick and choose. If they couldn't all do it, she would rather not do it all.
Let friends help. This was mostly learned through Applejack, who stubbornly refused help until it wore her out completely. From Applejack's lesson, Twilight concluded that it was better to accept help from friends rather than try to do it alone.
Always be a good friend no matter what. Like before, this was learned through one of her other friends, Pinkie Pie. Twilight learned a few things. First, one shouldn't get jealous if a friend spends time with a different person. Second, one should always control her own behavior. And third, if the other person isn't such a great person after all, you should still always control your own behavior as the truth will almost always come to light.
Be proud, but don't be a braggart. Twilight had always been proud of her magic, but when another unicorn, Trixie, came to town, Twilight became afraid that her friends might think she was showing off and not like her. However, she instead learned that it was not her magic, but how she portrayed herself that mattered. She learned that it was okay to be proud of her talents, and that she should be. She just had to make sure she didn't end up showing them off.
Never lose faith in your friends. When the group had to try and ask a sleeping dragon to leave, everyone except Twilight didn't want Fluttershy to join since they knew she was afraid and might hold them. Twilight originally insisted that Fluttershy would be a valuable asset since she could communicate with animals, but as the journey became more arduous and long because of Flutteshy holding them back, even she started to doubt her decision. But Fluttershy was able to prove herself in the end, and Twilight learned that she should have more faith in her friends, as they will always come through when the time really mattered.
Bring up problems. When Applejack and Rarity were having a fight during Twilight's first slumber party, things got rather hectic. But after settling their differences, they were able to work together. Through their actions, Twilight learned that it's better to raise any issues and try to work it out rather than just let it sit and argue over things.
Don't judge a book by its cover. When a mysterious zebra named Zekora is spotted in Ponyville, Twilight is one of the few who did not believe there was anything dangerous about her. But after getting "cursed" and seeing Zekora's strange actions and home, she was finally swayed to believe that Zekora may actually be bad. But when it's realized that Zekora was trying to warn and help them, and that the remedy was actually in a book she had initially dismissed because of the title, Twilight quickly learned that further investigation is required before one should give a final judgment. Not everything is as they initially seem.
Listen to your friends. -Even if they're a little weird. When a swarm of cute bugs called Parasprites invaded Ponyville, only Pinkie Pie knew of the way to get rid of them. However, no one really followed her and assumed she was doing one of her random things. When Pinkie Pie manages to send the swarm off with her strange one-pony band ensemble, Twilight learned that sometimes the answer can be found in the most strangest of places, and that no matter who or whatever the circumstances, she should still listen to whatever her friends had to say.
Everyone has hidden talents, and the power of teamwork. During the Winter Wrap-up, a tradition where the ponies work to literally make Winter disappear to make way for Spring and without the use of magic, Twilight felt a bit left out as she had no talents that would be of use. Though she tried, she couldn't find a team to join, and ended up despairing a bit. However, she was able to shine through her organizational skills to help pull the teams together when they needed it most. So here Twilight learned two things: one, sometimes it takes trial and error before someone could discover a talent; and two, the power of teamwork is important and can only be useful if everyone works together.
Personality:
Although Twilight never made much time for a social life, that does not make her an isolated, rude, anti-social hermit. Quite the contrary, she knows proper social etiquette and is quite friendly-even more so now that she has made her group of friends. However, she does have a few quirks that mark how she can be a little awkward at socializing, and also how she is just like any other girl pony out there.
Studious. As made obvious from the very beginning, Twilight is a very studious unicorn pony. She loves reading and researching, and can spend all her free time doing just that. Before, she used to cast aside any type of social interaction if there was something she wanted to research or study about. However, now she is more willing to set the reading aside so she can be with her friends. She still loves reading, and can usually be found reading a book if she's not engaged in something else.
Smart/knowledgeable. While she may not be an intellectual genius, Twilight is a lot more knowledgeable about things than most other ponies. This is due to her always being buried in a book. However, it should be known that while she may be booksmart, that doesn't necessarily mean she's that streetsmart. She does know quite a bit, but there's still a lot about life outside of books that she still has yet to discover. She may know about things, but may not necessarily know the reality of how such things work.
Polite and helpful. Despite being the bookworm, Twilight is actually very polite. She's quick to realize when she's wrong, and even quicker to apologize. Even if she may not want to do something or find things weird, she still shows manners and is generally nice. She's not standoffish or rude, as one might initially think of someone who used to prefer reading books to going to parties. She also likes to help others in any way she can, and is always more than willing to offer a helping hoof.
Mature, organized, logical, and practical. Next to Applejack, Twilight could be considered as the "older sister" role of the group, and is certainly considered the "leader" even though Applejack and even Rainbow Dash could fit the role just as well. This is mostly due to her being responsible about everything, and making sure everything comes out all right. This is helped by her ability to think things through and plan and organize. She can read a situation fairly quickly and can figure out any problems that might arise. Since she's read so many things and prefers the more rational and practical way of thinking things, she also has a lot of common sense and will think things through in a logical and methodical way. Her reasoning and line of thinking is usually well grounded, and she will be hesitant to even consider anything that is "supernatural" in a sense. Though she herself uses magic, she only believes in the magic that is inherent and naturally found within. Things such as curses and hexes are what she differentiates as just tricks that require smokescreens and mirrors to work, and she does not believe that such things are actually real or have any real effect. However, this also means she can also get annoyed when others are not acting sensible. It's not necessarily an irrational sense of annoyance, and she won't attack right from the start. But there are times when her patience can get tested and she'll get serious and reprimand others.
Determined, with a slight touch of stubbornness. When she sets her mind on something, Twilight will always try to see it through to the end-successfully. It does not have to be perfect, but as long as it works out she'll be pleased. This means that she will not give up even if an obstacle is thrown in her path and will instead try to work around it. This is especially so when she knows something is wrong and she is trying to make it right.
Courageous, in a sense. Although things can and do startle Twilight, she is level-headed and steadfast, and can be quite courageous in the face of danger or adversary. Usually this is because she would not place herself in such a situation unless there was a greater reason for it-like facing Nightmare Moon or the sleeping dragon. Although she may have fear, her reasoning and knowing that she must face this for the greater good helps her. She is more than willing to fight for a cause, especially if she has her friends with her.
Humble. Although Twilight is proud of her magical abilities and other skills, she really does not like to brag or really say much about them at all. She tends to keep quiet about that and does not want to be ill perceived by her friends. She will be quick to share any credit that is given to her to the appropriate parties, and also quick to recognize when she had help to solve a problem. She really isn't that self-centered and quite giving.
Insecure. However, this also makes her a little insecure about herself. She recognizes that everyone else will have great talents, and while she knows she also has talents, they sometimes may not measure up to the rest. Because she wants to be a good friend, she's afraid that she may make a mistake that would cause her friends to turn away-something she really does not wish to do. She also just wants to feel like she belongs, especially since she's still new to Ponyville. So while she may seem confident at times, she can also be quite vulnerable.
Crack under extreme pressure. While Twilight can work under some pressure, if it gets too intense for her she can literally crack. This is particularly so when something important (anything related to Celestia) is on a schedule or some kind of organized plan. If something goes wrong, she'll try to fix it, but sometimes it can be too much for even her to handle. Instead of despairing, she may just go a little on the desperate side and try anything she can think of to fix the problem- even if it's a little off the wall. She also can't think on an empty stomach, and usually thinks best when she's not hungry-especially in making important decisions.
Girly. Twilight really is like an average girl-pony. She may not be as stylish or fashionable as Rarity, but she does enjoy dressing up every now and then. She is also very fond of cute things, particularly animals. However, she does not like snakes. At all. She does get excited about sometimes the most randomest of things (though anything involving studying or researching is a given), especially when it involves her friends, and she likes having fun. Though she didn't use to before, she also enjoys social gatherings and attending parties a lot more.
But most of all, Twilight wants to keep her friends happy and safe, and will do whatever it takes to accomplish that. She truly treasures her friends, and though there may be bumps here and there, she will always try to work it out.
Extra:
Character Abilities: As magic is her forte, Twilight can perform a number of tricks. So far, she can perform at least 25 different magic spells, though not all of them are known. They vary from the practical to super silly. These are just the few that have been performed through the various episodes:
- "Wink": A basic teleport spell. She can vanish from one spot and instantly appear in another location. She can also bring along one other with her, though it makes her a little dizzy.
- Levitate objects.
- Create a door.
- Mustache.
- Zip lips. It should be noted this is a literal sense of "zipping lips", so a zipper does appear on the mouth.
- Create wind.
- Manipulation. She can manipulate both inanimate and animate objects. This is usually in conjunction with the levitation and mostly used to move things around. She has control over where the object goes.
- Could possibly milk cows. (Kind of ambiguous, but highly suggested considering the scene. Might fall under "Manipulation")
- Come to life spell. Essentially she can make an inanimate object move on its own. This is slightly different from the general "manipulation" ability. Here, she has no actual control.
Possessions: N/A
Anything else: Her cutie mark (the tattoo on her hip) is a giant sparkle. Cutie marks in this canon of My Little Pony actually represent some kind of purpose that each pony has found. They are not born with the cutie marks, they are actually discovered as they grow older. It's still unknown how Twilight got hers, but that's just a little tidbit of basic information about them so far.
