Slash was originally written by women for women, for fun and frolic, but also as a counter to the violence and rape-riddled fantasy fics that male fan writers adore. (or the boring, soulless, *endless* technobabble-filled adventure fic with characters so lacking in dimension you could exchange them for each other, but I digress)

The deep-rooted (and rotted) fear some men have of not being needed -- or worse! -- being seen as homosexual, is what makes some dismiss slash as being stories written by women ignorant of what "men are really like" when in actuality, slash is written by women who are effing sick to death of what men really like (and of getting those likes catered to by default in society) and who took the opportunity to give all misogynistic, selfish males the middle-finger salute whilst writing what we bloody well enjoy reading, and if they don't like it or don't understand it, we don't care, because it's not all about mens' wants/needs/fantasies.
