Short story for an AMV contest. I'll warn you, it's pretty sad.
Sometimes there is no absolution.
Sometimes...the pain never fades.
Are sins, ever forgiven?
Once there were twins, a boy and a girl, Cloud and Penelo. They were young, spirited, and inseparable. Where you saw one, it was a sure thing the other probably wasn't too far behind. Penelo worked in a local store, Cloud was a promising young SOLDIER. And as a SOLDIER, he had enemies. One day, after they spent the morning goofing off and hanging around Midgar, Penelo admits that she was really supposed to be watching the store and heads off. After taking a few steps, she pauses.
"Hey Cloud? Try to stay out of trouble, for my sake? I don't know what I'd do, if you weren't here. If something happened to you."
"I'm not going anywhere, okay?"
Penelo turns, flashing him a smile.
"That's what I wanted to hear. Well, see you later!"
As she runs off, Cloud stays, slightly confused.
But...I let you die...
The next morning, he learns that Penelo has been kidnapped by enemies of SOLDIER. His enemies. Desperate, terrified of what might happen, he rushes to save his sister.
Penelo.
Afraid of what they'll do to her...afraid of what they'll do to Cloud...
"Barely know, was it? Yet at a trace he goes boundin' off for ya! Tell me how could that be!?"
"That's what I'd like to know! I just met him that one time and that's it!"
Where are you?
But by the time Cloud reaches her...it's too late.
I'm not fit to help anyone. Not my family. Not my friends...
Years later Cloud visits the places they knew so well. The bluffs over looking Midgar. The church where the flowers she loved so much grew. Her voice still echoed there.
...Nobody...
