Peaksville Places

PEAKSVILLE LOCATIONS.

The following locations are in Peaksville, and open to all players.

Main Street:

The Palace Cinema

On the north end of Main Street stands the Palace Cinema. Always staffed by a compliment of faceless ticket-takers and concession vendors, the Palace Cinema shows only the latest hits - of the 1950s, of course.

That is, of course, if you don't go in alone.

A single customer will find themselves trapped in the cinema, and when the lights go down, the reel will play back scenes from the life of the viewer. Whether the scenes are happy or humiliating will depend on how well-behaved the viewer has been in the past week.

Sadie's Malt Shoppe and Diner

Sadie's is located across the street from the cinema. The diner is your typical 50's shoppe setting, with a bar-style soda counter and booths with vinyl upholstery situated along the windows. The floor is black and white checkered linoleum.

There isn't actually a Sadie in charge - in fact, no one is in charge. The diner is a complete ghost town. Occasionally, however, the old jukebox in the corner will start playing. If you are the only one to hear it, it will be a slow, sad song you recognize from your life. Of course, if you're with a friend or two, the music will be that old stand-by, "Feeling Sentimental".

As for the diner itself: the storage room in back is fully stocked with food, and the soda fountains and ice cream freezers seem to refill themselves.

A menu on the counter proclaims that chocolate ice cream floats are only 10 cents.

Town Hall

Town hall is smack in the middle of Main Street; it is a white building with a few Roman columns which were obviously an afterthought. Inside can be found the offices of the mayor and his staff, as well as an auditorium for town meetings. The mayor and his staff, however, cannot be found.

Town Square

Town Square isn't exactly a square. It's actually just a couple of park benches and hedges around a column that may or may not have once held a statue. The plaque in front of the column is worn, so the inscription is barely there.

Clyde's Bar

Clyde's is an old barroom located under what was probably once a general store, but is now just a dark and empty building. It has the typical look of a 50s pub, with a coat-rack for your jacket and hat and a drink waiting for you on the bar. However, it is very dilapidated and sad-looking. There is no bartender.

The jukebox here doesn't work. The bar is completely silent.

Occasionally, however, if you walk in at just the right time at night, the bar will be inexplicably full of patrons dressed in the fashion of the late 20s. Feel free to dance the night away, but be careful not to get too attached; if you step outside or into the washroom or even close your eyes for longer than a blink, they'll be gone.

If you ever experience this, the only hint that they were there is the faint smell of smoke.

The Store Above Clyde's

This once may have been a general store - or so the speculation goes, based on the sign. The letters that once hung above the awning have faded or fallen away with the exception of the following:

"L ORE"

Inside, the building is dark. The windows are boarded up, and there is a faint smell of smoke.

Rarely, the store may not be quite so empty as it seems.

Harvey Kip's Dry Goods

As you may have guessed by now, there is no Harvey Kip. Inside the dry goods store can be found a supply of tailored clothes which just happen to fit you. The store also sells non-perishable foods, bolts of cloth, shoes, and so on.

You will also find, upon closer inspection, that there is a set of stairs leading to an attic storeroom stocked only with mannequins and mannequin parts - hundreds of them.

The Phone Booth

The phone booth is a clear glass booth with an old phone inside which will occasionally ring for hours. You're welcome to answer it.

If you do, of course, one of two things may happen:

1. The voice at the other end will be a loved one who will try to convince you to escape Peaksville by killing yourself.

2. The voice at the other end will be someone from your life who is now dead. They will be unable to understand you or hear you at first - but the longer you talk, the better the connection will become.

Outgoing phone calls will be met with static.

The Peaksville Public Library

The public library is a venerable stone structure with all the books you could want. Of course, no one's manning the front desk to stamp the date, so you're on your own when it comes to bringing books back.

Dr. Stockton's Office

A fully-stocked doctor's office, complete with dispensary. Dr. Stockton, however, is nowhere to be found.

The YMCA

Complete with swimming pool. No membership necessary.

Sheriff's Station

Complete with holding cells. There is a locked, unbreakable weapons case.

Beyond Main Street:

Maple Street

If you ever happen to wander on to Maple Street, stay away from the houses: it looks as though there has been some sort of riot here. There is the body of an old man wearing overalls lying in the street.

The Park

The park is sometimes there and sometimes not. It has a duckpond and a bandstand, as well as a small carousel of the catch-the-brass-ring variety, with painted wooden horses. Brass music for the bandstand is piped in through a series of speakers; there is no band.

Whether you are alone or with someone else, there is always the hint of a chance that you will meet your childhood self here.

The Garage / Used Car Lot

Occasionally the used car lot will appear, though there will be no dealer around. Most of the cars are lemons, but you're welcome to fix them up. However, there is a strange clause accompanied by taking a car of this particular lot: the driver will find it impossible to lie.
