A couple things

I've decided I may not have children, but also that if I do, I will raise them gender neutral until they choose one for themselves. Or maybe just balance the stereotypes to make them a good person without pressure to conform to bad expectations that come with whatever genitalia they have ( Read more... )

Wow. I'm now massively intrigued as to the thought process that brought this about! That sounds way more liberal hippie of you that you usually are, Tyler. LOL.

Well, I forget what got me thinking about Game Boys when I woke up, but I was thinking about why a handheld video game system would have a gender. It was played predominantly by boys, but still, my sister had one. Then I thought about a Game Girl, a pink Game Boy, but I looked it up and it never existed anyway. Still, it happens a lot. Boy version's blue, girl version's pink, other than that the toy's identical. Assigning a kid an identity based on what's between their legs and not what's between their ears can seriously fuck them up developmentally.
And for the record, I'm about as socially liberal as anybody. Anything that gave you an impression otherwise was an act to make Drama more interesting.

Haha! I love your dizzying intellect and the random segues. And don't for half a second thing I don't totally agree with you on this one. It's just interesting to see it laid out like this.

Gender is about as fluid as sexual orientation. Pretty frickin' sweet havin' all this political thought before supper.

I'm pretty sure we had a big talk on why you should not circumcise babies... you you were pro-circumcision... back when it was my social concern of the week.

I understand what you're saying about the gender-neutral situation. And I think it's a fantastic idea but wouldn't outside sources influence that child's decision? Like, if they went to pre-school and the teacher auotmatically pinned them as a certain gender, almost like unintentional brain-washing. There will always be people that would want to force the gender on the from the start, most likely their natural born gender.

Great idea though. With some thought that could really change the world.

Maybe I'd home school them, maybe I'd talk to the teacher, maybe I'd be able to explain it to my kid, or maybe I'd teach the kid to ignore certain parts of what their teachers tell them.

just potty train your kid early, name it a unisex name and dress it in orange.

That completely makes sense. It's a definite social experiment that needs to happen. Maybe not from you, but at least from someone.Spread the word. This could be huge.

Unfortunately, the world needs genders... it's not a question of upbringing, unlike religion, for example... I'm going to leave everything on the table for my kids. Educate them about everything and let them make up their minds. But gender? There definitely needs to be some sort of classification... our species and society functions under male and female. Once you as a parent aren't a driving force behind that, you send a kid mixed messages between home and the outside world... probably screwing him up more than you would if you just raised him "normally" (whatever that means). Obviously teaching a kid about equality and respect among all genders and sexual orientations is necessary, but raising a gender-neutral kid?

Yeah, society functions better, but I don't mean to change that. I just mean my kid ( ... )
