Bastogne is a tiny little crossroads in the Ardennes, a forrest, hill country in eastern France. During WWII, Bastogne was the site of the Battle of The Bulge, a miserably cold and hellish gulag where very few fought and held many to a standstill. this is so well said, and heartbreaking. more so because i know and love these people too. (and more so because of the parallels to my own upbringing.) i too find myself dancing around the edges of their territory, irrationally afraid of contracting their misery like some contagion.
