I remember recording Sailor Moon on VHS my freshman year in highschool, and crying when it stopped coming on tv. Granted, it was my first anime, so I knew nothing of the greatness of fansubs, or subtitled anime in general for that matter. I also remember reading everything I could on the internet to find out what the heck happened in the episodes I didn't see. I still haven't seen some of them :(
Technology is a crazy thing, but you should be happy for the noobs! As long as they aren't "know-it-alls," that is!!
I so agree with this. Fandom newbies don't realize how ver easy they have it compared to just 5-10 years ago.
And what about watching anime on LaserDisc? That's how AUSAM was watching some things when Wonders of the East was open on College Street and the club met there. Too bad the owner of the shop just picked everything up one night and left without telling anyone.
AHHH i remeber fansubs. my first one was the sailor moon super s movie! during the peak of my sailor moon fandom the guy at the comic store waved it in my face like a piece of candy and i knew i was not leaving until i talked him into selling it to me. i watched it over and over and quickly became obsessed with getting more fansubs. the comic book store here in bham rented (illegal i know but i gladly paid) them and had a huge fucking collection. the guy would make you a copy for 8$. i remember watching a fan dub of laputa! getting all of utena on fansubs and then watching the X movie and mononoke hime back in junior high<3<3<3 lol you remember my berserk and sailor stars tapes! ohhh fansubs! it's so fucking easy now, i still appreciate it everytime i get the latest anime from japan days after it was shown on tv though! my prized vhs collection is kinda worthless now except for nostalgia. josh's vcr busted my first berserk tape! fucker!
lol! Yes! I remember when my friend Sara got fansubs of all three Sailor Moon movies and we had a big party to watch them.
This is a conversation my anime friends and I are fond of having. *cue crotchety old-woman voice* Back in my day we had to work for our anime, and we liked it! You young whippersnappers are spoiled!
I remember when being an anime fan was kind of like this cool, underground club... while I appreciate the fact that I don't have to special-order everything from Japan, I think the market is kind of oversaturated.
It's just weird seeing so many "kids" at anime conventions these days. I was like um, eighteen before I found out about anime cons and started going. And back in those days you still went to video rooms to see things you hadn't before. And now you can just turn on Cartoon Network and be flooded by anime. Spoiled I tell ya, spoiled!
