Chapter One: Servants & Princes
Key POV
I trudged up the spiral staircase with a bag of bread, enough for the two of us. The attic door creaked as I entered our room, silently closing it behind me. I sat on the edge of the king sized bed and nudged Taemin. His sweet moon shaped eyes opening with a smile, he glanced at the clock and let out a small sigh, “Morning. Sorry, I slept in again. How much did she assign us today?” I pushed the crumpled paper to him, he opened it and nodded, immediately getting up and heading towards the kitchen area. I walked over to the sleepy boy and handed him the sack of food so he could cut it. I sauntered to the balcony and opened the door for some fresh air, the streets below us were busy with cars and shouting merchants. I looked beyond to admire the shining white castle in the distance, the sun made it glow. How I wish one day we could just sit in one of their rooms without worries of getting kicked out. I bit off a piece of bread and let it sit in my mouth, it was hot and fresh, right from the bakery across the street. I stepped back into the room and sat down on the cushy couch waiting for Taemin to join me, “It’s not that much anymore, at least now we can have some time to ourselves.” He leaned against the counter,” It’s because of that ball. I want to go so bad and see prince Minho, he’s a sight to behold. I can’t believe the witch won’t even let us go out of the house on that day, it’s ludacris.” His eyebrows knitted and his cheeks puffed out, how cute. He opened his mouth once more, of course he had something else to say,” Didn’t you want to see prince Jonghyun? Ugh. She’s really terrible, if I could be in a room alone with her, ooh she would get it!” He never failed to make me laugh, that little one. I wiggled in the sofa,” Taemin. Unzipping your jacket and showing your shirt with a mean face on won’t scare her. Remember, she’s the same person who. .never mind. Ready to get to work?” He pouted and I tossed him an apron and a pair of gloves. He put the apron on and shoved his back to me so I could tie it,” Krystal is going to be all over prince Minho, I know it. Sulli probably will attack prince Jonghyun with aegyo, do you know if he likes it, aegyo I mean.” I shrugged my shoulders,” Who knows. Okay now tie mine. You shouldn’t think they will do something when you don’t even know if they will. If we don’t get to see the princes this time there will most likely be a next time. When one door closes another one opens. It’s like the circle of life, I think.” We both have crushes on the princes, but we usually keep this talk to a minimum unless we are up here in our room. We didn’t really want the witch (Luna) to know we were, gay. Just then the speaker phone buzzed sending both of us to roll our eyes, I ran over to push the button. “Yes Luna?” I tried hard to disguise my annoyance. Her voice rung in my ears,” Make Sulli and Krystal samkyupsal, and I want decaf coffee, you know how I like it Taemin.” I let go of the button and let out a small growl, I held on to the circle,” It’s Kibum. It’ll be done in half an hour, Luna.” I heard a slight ‘mmh’ and signaled to Taemin, he started putting his socks on and slid on his shoes running downstairs and out of the house holding the food credit card tightly. I entered the downstairs kitchen and cleaned my hands, wiping thoroughly. I took out the grill and let a few pieces of pork belly sit on it, I took out two plates and put side dishes on it. After a good five minutes Taemin came in holding a styrofoam filled with coffee, his auburn hair was a mess. He looked in the mirror and combed it with his hands, and immediately washing his hands. He looked at me and I gave him a thumbs up. He ran up to Luna’s room and gave the decaf to her, no conversation, just handing. Anytime I see Luna with him it never fails to cross my mind what kind of mother she is. She has her first son named Onew and then she gets drunk one night and had Taemin, but to her he’s nothing but a ‘mistake child’ and deserves nothing but to work for her as a servant. It’s sickening, no, she’s sickening. It’s fate how we met, Luna gets married to my father, her daughters and Taemin move in, my dad is love struck and is totally oblivious to her doings. He dies a year after they get married, I turn into a servant, Taemin is basically shoved to me, and I’ve been like a mother to him ever since ten years ago. He is like my own son, and I’m totally complete with him, there’s nothing else I want right now. One more year and I can take him somewhere else, anywhere but here. I could leave since I’m not a minor but I wouldn’t dare leave him alone with them, I can’t even imagine what they would treat him like. Especially since he is definitely handsome, he gets treated the worse, we are locked up in this house and can’t even be downstairs when we aren’t doing chores. She had my father build the attic as a ‘play home’ for us when we were younger, soon to know that it would be our room as her servants. But, it’s not like a jail cell; it’s quite like a really big one-story house. It’s complete with a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen. All well-furnished and with electricity, plus for a bonus we have a balcony overlooking the whole kingdom, so being cooped up in our room all the time isn’t all that bad. I looked back at the pork that was cooking on the grill, quickly taking it off and cutting it with kitchen scissors. I placed an equal amount of meat on each plate and stole some into my mouth, like they would find out; please those blondes couldn’t tell mashed potatoes from puke. I put the platters on the tray and headed up stairs to the south hall. Our house was like a mini castle, thanks to my father. I counted the doors until I reached four, I opened it and heard squeals from inside. Krystal was changing, it wasn’t normal for her to change after ten in the morning; we had strict rules for that. I closed the door and waited outside, in moments she opened the door and I entered. The room smelled like sweet perfume, my favorite. I grabbed the coffee table and pulled it near the mini couch, I spread out the platters and Krystal went behind me,” Kibum, aren’t you tired? You should sit down. You poor thing, here let me help you.” Those words were all a trick, mocking me in the biggest of ways. I refused,” Where’s Sulli? If she doesn’t start eating now the food will go cold.” Krystal shook her head looking at the pair of beds ” She’s not sleeping. Maybe doing the nasty with your little Taemin?” I laughed, maybe a little too loud. I nodded my head sarcastically,” Uh huh. To make some deformed babies? You’re sick. He’s your own brother, how could you say something like that? Never mind I don’t want to know. Get Sulli in here now, I’m serious.” She sighed and let out a groan,” Oh Sulli! Come here my sweet little sister, now. .” there was no response so she tried again,” Sulli, Kibum wants you!” She then came in running, her expression like a doll. Her lust for me was cute at first but, it just became obsession. I learned to live with it even if it kills me one day. She moves on pretty quick with other guys but I’m not sure what’s up with me. She cocked her head to one side looking straight at me with bright sparkling eyes; another thing I’ve learned to live with, nothing special anymore. Her lips curled into a smile,” Hi Kibum! Nice morning, huh?” I gave her a blank look
,” Sulli would you just sit down and eat before it gets cold? I have a million other things to do besides watch you give me blonde moments.” She pouted and scarfed down the plate and went back into the powder room, Krystal giggled,” You don’t give her cute faces back anymore? It’s about time; she needs to get over you.” She put her plate back on the tray and followed me to the door; she waved and closed it lightly.
I put the tray down into the sink and started filling it with water and soap. Taemin was standing beside me,” After you do the dishes we will be finished, want to go shopping? The witch gave me our pay checks when I was delivering her coffee. Ooh, we should go pick up Jessica and Tiffany noona. What do you say?” It did sound fun and we didn’t have much to do around here,” Sure. Why not?” The excited boy jumped up and down; his crescent eyes creeping on his face,” I’ll go call them.” I dried the dishes and put them neatly in the cupboard, running after the boy. Jessica and Tiffany adored Taemin, they absolutely loved him. Today, will be fun.
Jonghyun POV
The sunshine crept into our bedroom even though we were both wide awake. The smell of toast and a mixture of cologne filled the air. I took the cup of milk in my hands and joined Minho at the balcony, the weather was breezy; my ultimate favorite kind. It’s like the world knows me, of course that is silly. But then again, I’ve been thinking a lot of weird thoughts lately. His hair danced in the wind making him smile, a nice, calming, best friend kind of smile. I took a gulp of my milk and looked over to the south side of Summerlin Kingdom, I liked it. The thought of going over there to that small cozy looking village gave me a fuzzy feeling. Like it was pulling me, the wind, somehow I need to go there, just to see if I was right. I wanted to see the other side of town and just live it, be it, a commoner. The tall figure was eyeing me,” Why do you look like that?”. I peeped at him giving him a puzzled look,” Gay? Because I am gay, and so are you. Best friends know this kind of junk, so what are you?” He laughed and pulled his head back. He came back to Earth and pushed me; causing my milk to spill over the height, leaking down below on top of a guard. He looked up, mad as mad can get. He immediately changed his expression when I waved at him, causing him to blush. Nice to know I had an effect on men too, I guess this’ll come in handy. Minho took both of his hands and shook me,” I know we are gay, but when you were looking to the south side you were totally dazed. Oh my god you can be so funny, Kim Jonghyun, you are my best friend for life!” I shrugged,” I am quite a jester. Hey, I thought we were best friends for life ever since ever, did you just acknowledge that now? So I’ve been thinking we were the best of friends when you were thinking squat? What a friend you were.” I shot him a winning smile and he took me into a hug. We made our way into our kitchen on our bikes; yes our castle is so big we need bikes to get around, do you have a problem? But of course the wheels are cleaned every day, no dirt is allowed in the castle, didn’t you hear that before? We rang the cheerful bells upon entering the kitchen; Chef Leeteuk and Chef Heechul were looking at us with open arms,” Look, it’s our two handsome princes! What do our boys want for lunch, eh?” Chef Leeteuk pointed to the fresh menu on the nearby chalk board. We both skimmed it; I clapped my hands together,” Clam chowder! That’s good right?” The two chefs laughed in harmony,” Boy, everything in our kitchen is good! Haven’t you eaten our dishes for twenty years? Foolish boys. Come, sit down.” We took a seat at the stools and watched the thick chowder being poured into white china bowls. The aroma sent both of us into frenzy. We took a spoonful to our mouths; savoring the flavor, leaving the two chefs in anticipation. Minho’s eyes fluttered,” Whoa this is really good!” I nodded,” Delicious. Who made it?” The two chefs hesitated, Leeteuk spoke up.
“I poured the clam in and stirred it to perfection.”
“Well I made the base, so I made it, you barely did anything, Leeteuk!”
“If I didn’t pour the clam in it wouldn’t be clam chowder would it now, Heechul?”
“If I didn’t make the chowder it would be just clam. Would the boys want to eat small pieces of clam for lunch? I don’t think so. Leeteuk, stop taking credit!”
The little argument went on for a while and we slipped away without them noticing, taking the clam chowder with us. Minho let out a quick ‘phew’ and went into the garden to enjoy the rest of our meal. I grabbed a tall glass cup and filled it with water, sticking two buttercup flowers in it. I placed it in the middle of our small table, Minho laughed, causing me to choke on my chowder,” W-what?” He pointed to the flowers, stopping to take small breaths,” You stopped doing this when we were kids, what made you do this now?” I looked back at the flower bed,” They stopped planting them when we were kids, but they added them because of my request. Like it? Well, I kind of think we are too old for tea parties, so clam chowder seems to fit this better.”
We went into the maid room and surprised them; they were in shock. Maid Narsha and maid Gain were ironing pieces of clothing made from fine silk; my guess was from China. Minho sat down next to their feet,” What’s all this for?” Maid Hara looked up,” It’s for the ball tomorrow night, haven’t you heard? You two are going to meet ladies to see if you can get married. You two will look stunning in these suits, they are imported from Hong Kong, the best quality silk.” I was totally confused and I could tell Minho was also, we waved goodbye and biked to our room. I rapidly closed our door and locked it tight; I looked at him in a daze. All he could muster out was,” Marry? Ladies?” We were in pure shock, how could the maids know and us have little knowledge of a party, or ball of any kind happening tomorrow. .night. It was ridiculous; seriously absurd. Who even planned this party? Did we have any say in this, at all? Our parents knew we were gay and they promised us that we wouldn’t be married to women, or even be forced to dance with them all night. It sent chills down my spine, a woman being more than a friend? Disgusting, clearly Minho felt the same way. We were both laying on the ground staring at the painting on the ceiling; clouds and mythical gods. “How could they do this to us? They know we aren’t attracted to women; we are gay, not straight. G-a-y. This ball, is, ugh, Minho can you believe this?” He ran his hand through his hair,” This seriously isn’t fair. They promised us. And it’s a waste of all those ladies’ time.” I sat up and punched the air, getting balance on my feet. Marriage was also way out of the question. I took out two bottles of water and tossed one to the boy on the ground. “We should ditch. Like go to the south side of Summerlin, and hideout in a house as guests. We could pay them for one night! Are you up for it?” He gulped down half his bottle,” As long as you take the blame. Ha-ha.” It was nice sharing a room with Minho, like I wasn’t so lonely anymore, even if he was only in the opposite wing. We were friends ever since I could remember and we only thought of moving into a room together now, after seeing college dorms, which to our loss we couldn’t attend, being princes and all. It wasn’t much of a hassle going to the east wing all the time but it was something that wasn’t necessary, so we took all the furniture out of the old sitting room, which was huge, and stuffed all our belongings into it and made it nice and cozy. I’m glad I have a true friend like him, he’s the only one I have, but I wouldn’t trade him for another one. Right now, he is everything. He is what I wake up for, what I have energy for, what I have a sense of humor for, what I make flowers for, and what keeps me going. Without him, I’m not sure where I would be, maybe still in bed.
