Chapter One: Jessica
I stepped up the clear path up to the door. Its time, I knocked on the door and a warm face greeted me,” Oh my, Jonghyun! We haven’t seen you in so long! What brings you here today after all these years?” I smiled, satisfied at her joy,” I actually wanted to see Kibum, is he home?” She nodded and pulled me inside the house,” He is out on an errand but he will be back soon, come, sit.” I entered the kitchen, the scent of lavender still roamed from when we were kids.
I sat down on the stool, it wasn’t a ladder anymore. Kibum’s umma was making tea on the far side of the room; she occasionally glanced at me every few seconds. I smiled at her and she blushed, she walked over to me and sat on the stool across from mine. A mug was pushed to my fingers and I took a sip, it was definitely Kibum’s umma’s famous barley tea.
She placed an aged hand under her chin and grinned,” What have you been up to all these years?” I spun the spoon around the liquid before replying, it wasn’t going to be a story.
“Well, when I moved to America I spent time studying to be a musician. I plan on being a songwriter soon after I finish my studies. And how has the family been?” She smirked, knowing I was holding back a lot of my life. Her face lifted up from her palms when the front door creaked open, she went over to the boy. I waited until they got into the kitchen and stood up, I studied his grown features. Plump pink lips, beautiful almond shaped eyes, a sharp nose, and a porcelain complexion.
It seemed as he was doing the same thing, but his expression wasn’t as merry as mine. His umma put a hand to his shoulder,” Is that how you greet your friend? Ayah, Kibum, where’s your manners?” she left with a single pat on my back. He went over to the counter and unpacked his groceries; I followed, feeling weirder than a lost dog. I touched his waist and he cringed, quickly swatting my hand away.
I heard little laughs and squeals coming from the front, I could only make out so much,”Umma! Please, stop I can get them by myself, no! Ugh, I’m serious, please, umma!” A bouncy golden ponytail made its way into view; it turned around to reveal the face. She stopped her childish noises and stared curiously at me in return; she scooted next to ‘Umma’ and held her hand. She whispered loud enough for me to hear, although I’m sure she had no idea of the matter,” Umma, who’s that?” She got a response and nodded, quietly making her way over to Kibum, nudging him,” Kibum, aren’t you going to ask him to stay for dinner?” He shook his head slightly, murmuring something inaudible in her ear.
She pouted and made her way in front of me, her aegyo making me burn up inside,” Would you like to stay for dinner, Jonghyun?” I nodded and she clapped her hands together,” Great! We got take out today and I’m sure you like kimbap, right?” I nodded once more and she hugged Kibum around the waist, what was all that about? Who was she anyways?
We all sat down at the table, picking up numerous amounts of kimbap with our chopsticks. She didn’t stop glancing at me and Kibum; she finally spoke up,” So how long have you known each other for?” I was sure Kibum wasn’t going to answer the way he was going,” About . . . twenty years. Ever since Kibum was born.” Her mouth opened and looked back at Kibum, lightly nudging him,” Why haven’t I ever heard of him? You little dummy, never once have I heard of your childhood friend!” he shrugged. His mom glared at him and went back to her gaze on me,” Do you have a place to stay for the time being?” I shook my head,” No, but I am going to a hotel after this to see if they have any vacant rooms available.” She over exaggerated a head shake and finger no-ing,” You will stay here; you can stay in Kibum’s room with him like old times. You two need to catch up more; you’ve been separated for too long! No need to pay for an overpriced room at a fancy hotel.” She won’t take no for an answer.
Jessica left early after the dishes were cleared and cleaned. I took my bag upstairs and entered the room, Kibum was sprawled on the bed and looking up at the ceiling. The room was still pink, but it was faded into an even lighter shade. I smiled at the sight, this room held a lot of memories, of us. He rolled on his side and scowled at me,” Well, what are you waiting for? Go to sleep.” The sound of his voice sent shivers down my spine,” When did you get so mean?” He scoffed and sat up, fixing his hair,” When I didn’t get breakfast. Why are you here anyways?” I’m pretty darn sure he knew the exact reason I came back to this little town. I didn’t even need to answer before he stepped out of the room to who knows where.
I unpacked my bag and frowned when I saw what I forgot; pajamas. Kibum saw it too; he went into his closet and exited with a pair of dinosaur pajamas. He hated dinosaurs, from what I knew, but he’s changed so much I’m not sure what’s right and wrong. He made his way onto the bed in his long pants and hoodie; it was winter and snowing season so hoodies were like a best friend. After exchanging a few awkward glances I snuck into the bed and cuddled next to him, he resisted and nudged closer to the edge. I got up and so did he, but his eyes didn’t meet mine and I was worried,” Kibum, what’s up with you? Ever since I got here you’ve been like a mime, only acting and no talking. Don’t you remember what we promised that nigh-“ He immediately glared at me with dry eyes and a fresh scowl,” You . . . you don’t know? I’m engaged. I’m freaking engaged Jonghyun! Didn’t you get the signs? Or are you too American to see them?”
With every word that registered in my ears it was like a bullet to my heart. I was speechless, and his rage was completely and utterly visible now. It was like he didn’t even have the time to breathe before shooting out his next death speech,” And, you know what? I lived happily without you here, yea, and I found the love of my life without you. I did well by myself; I didn’t need you here to make stupid promises. I didn’t need to wait more than a decade to find Jessica, no, because she came to me!” all I had the strength to do was swallow my spit, and I managed to muster out nearly a sentence,” Have, I mean, are you h-happy?” I was on the edge of tear-land and desperately holding on for dear life, hoping to god I wouldn’t cry in front of him. He smirked and gripped the bed sheets,” That’s something you don’t need to know. But if you really must know, yes. I’m one of the happiest Koreans in this stupid town, and I’m not gay either, I’m perfectly straight.” That was the last thing I heard before my soul died inside of me.

So these chapters will be very far apart because of my lack of knowledge in angst . . .uhhg. >:[
