If I have to ask whether or not you're a native English speaker and you actually are, then maybe you should take a little more time with your internet postings.  I'm tired of reading stuff that have words that are not capitalized, tons of misspellings, and weird punctuation.  Seriously, I could name 5 people right now (but won't be that mean) that ( Read more... )

I'm not a native speaker and that sort of thing pisses me off. There's a person (not here on LJ, she's "famous") that drives me insane with the way they write. Misspellings and so many exclamation points you'd think they're dying and crying out for help. Ugh.

I have language pet peeves. :s

For me it depends on what is being posted. For a quick comment or an entry in one's own journal, my personal opinion is that folks should be free to post however they like. Who knows what is bringing about the errors. Right now I am using a computer with a sensitive yet clunky keyboard. If I type the slightest bit too lightly, the keystroke does not register. If I try to type harder, I get two of whatever I was going for. If I'm in a hurry I don't always catch it. Then there are posts from my phone. It has a predictive language function in place of spell check so it leaves behind errors and, instead, changes intentional words it doesn't recognize to strange things I didn't intend. The keyboard is tiny so it's totally easy to make an error and making corrections is such a bitch that I'll end up leaving little errors like letters in lower case that should be capitalized, that kind of thing. I think a lot of folks are posting from their phones nowadays. If I see a ton of errors, I just assume that that was what was going on ( ... )

Yeah, but there's a difference between what I'm talking about and faulty technology errors. I understand those because I have a finicky shift button. And sure feel free to type however you want in your own journal, but if you have these types of errors, I'll quickly unfriend you. It gives me a huge headache. But like in communities and elsewhere, not cool (and that's mostly what I'm complaining about). I'm just sick of people not caring. :|

Yeah, I hear ya. I guess for me there are certain things that bug and others I'm okay with. The things that I can look past may be a total annoyance for someone else. Like I don't mind if folks type in all lowercase. I know it's not okay to do that in a professional environment and because of that I am disapproving when I see it at work but anywhere else, I'm cool with it. I know some folks just hate that. Incorrect word choices bother me more (your vs you're, that kind of thing.) But see, folks who make those errors a lot (everyone does it once in a while) probably really don't know better so how can I expect them to fix it? If I get angry, it's probably best directed at the educational system here or where ever they come from rather than at the person them self, you know. That said, it's totally within your rights to un-friend that person so you don't have to see it. Why should your LJ experience be annoying to you?

Well-said.

Some days I'm more annoyed with it than others. Lol. Today I was really annoyed with it. Tomorrow, maybe I'll be more forgiving?
