The (incomplete) List of Books I Have Read in 2013

February
  • A Lion Among Men, Gregory Maguire (the Wicked quadrilogy) Unfinished,
I had forgotten how difficult to parse Gregory Maguire's writing is. I gave up in frustration.
  • Unspoken, Sarah Rees Brennan (The Lynburn Legacy) ★★★★★
    SO EXCITED for the sequel!
  • Machine of Death: A Collection of Stories About People Who Know How They Will Die, Ryan North, Matthew Bernardo and David Malki!, eds.(Audio Book/Podcast) Reread, ★★★★★
    Likewise excited for the sequel!!
  • March
  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith Reread, ★★★★★
Just as I remembered it from when I was a child.
  • I Am An Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World, Eve Ensler ★★★★☆
Well written, poignant monologues. Highly recommend a read. Only 4 stars because it feels unfinished.
  • April/May
  • How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me: One Person's Guide to Suicide Prevention, Susan Rose Blauner Set aside due to content, will come back to it later.
  • Invisible Lives, Anjali Banerjee Unfinished
I know little to nothing about Indian culture, so this one is taking a little longer to get through. It's so beautiful, though; very well written.

  • His Last Letter: Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester, Jeane Westin ★★★★☆
One thing that bugs me, though, is (although extremely well researched) it seems like the author hasn't decided between history text and historical fiction; it just kinda flips around in the middle and I hope it will settle down to one. It finally settled down into a thoroughly enjoyable historical fiction!
  • June
  • Yoga in Action Preliminary Course, Geeta S. Iyengar The course manual for my yoga class; quite an interesting read, too.
  • All my friends are dead., Avery Monsen & Jory John ★★★★★
    Funny, and oddly inspiring.
  • The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman Reread, ★★★★★
Short story says so much about the "place" of women in society, and about the ravages of postpartum depression. A perennial favorite.
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard, JK Rowling ★★★★★
I really, really like fairy tales, fables, and short stories. This is my favorite of the HP charity books.

  • The Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald: 21 Novels and Short Stories, F. Scott Fitzgerald ★★★☆☆
I kind of cheated putting this up here. I didn't read the whole collection, just the short stories. Which are rather boring, truth be told. I've always wanted to read the works of Zelda Fitzgerald; I wonder if there are any published volumes?
  • July
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Nagaru Tanigawa Unfinished
I started watching the anime a long time ago, but like most series I didn't finish it.
  • Superheroes: The Best of Philosophy and Pop Culture, William Irwin ★★★★★
I know nothing of comic books and superheroes aside from the movie adaptations, but even so this is a great read. It assumes no knowledge on the part of the reader and quite deftly explains complicated philosophical theorys. But in a fun way! I can't put it down!
  • Postsecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God, Frank Warren Reread ★★★★★
This book has a special meaning to me. I first read it after my aunt's funeral, and I keep all of the memorial cards from each funeral I attend tucked between the pages. There are too many this year.
  • August
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Vol. 1, Gaku Tsugano (art) and Nagaru Tanigawa (story) ★★★★★
Super excited to read the manga! I've totally stalled on the novel. :(
  • This Is How You Die: Stories of the Inscrutable, Infallible, Inescapable Machine of Death, Matthew Bennardo, David Malki!, and Ryan North, eds. ★★★★★
So far, it's as good as I hoped. Let's hope it continues that way. :)
Update: I think the best thing I can say about this anthology, aside from the other stuff I've blogged about, is the story I thought I didn't really care for STILL made me cry like a baby. My only gripe is they saved the weakest stories for the end.
  • Kawaii Not, Too: Cute Gets Badder, Meghan Murphy ★★★★★
Love the webcomic, love the book. The haiku are especially cute/funny.
  • September/October
  • The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide, David J. Miklowitz, PhD ★★★☆☆
(LIBRARY BOOK-DUE October 2) Picking chapters and reading randomly
This was a book my dad's therapist found and suggested we read as a family. So we are; I'm up first. (Started in August, moved to September)
So far, it's not telling me anything I didn't already know.
Ok, so it was a good book. It was very clinical, which was a good thing. I mostly read the clinical parts, and skimmed everything else.
  • A Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin Abandoned/Picking up at Odd Moments
I bought the first four books of the series as a set on my Kindle. Amazon was running a sale or something at the time; it was ages ago. Finally started reading them one day last week and I must say, I'm intrigued. On the other hand, this might take a while to get through. (Started in August, moved to September/October)
I think my problem with this series is the number of narrators. Since the narrative style switches with each narrator (which switches with each chapter) it's taking me too long to get through, so I'm getting frustrated.
  • November
  • The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins Reread ★★★★★
I just felt like reading it again. :) I really enjoy this book, but not for any one reason. Quite honestly, I hate Katniss. Well, hate is a strong word. But she's not my favorite. Which is odd because she's the lens through which all information flows. Anyway, enjoyable book. Possibly moving on to the sequels soon.

  • Negima! Magister Negi Magi, Volume 1, Ken Akamatsu ★★☆☆☆
Negima! Magister Negi Magi, Volume 2, Ken Akamatsu ★★☆☆☆
I don't often read harem manga; I prefer slice of life. Still, it seems so cute! I was introduced to it when I helped a friend of mine cosplay as one of the girls. We had to turn a skirt into a vest. The process was ... interesting.
OMG I HATE IT! I find the main character annoying. Too many characters to keep up with. I don't like my fanservice with a side of pedophilia. Two stars because the art is pretty cool: very detailed and I like the style.

  • December
  • Catching Fire, Suzanne Collins Reread ★★★★★
    Rereading following seeing the movie.

  • Warm Bodies, Issac Marion ★★★★★
Amazon was running a special, and I got this book for my kindle for less than $2! I've seen the movie and thought it was ok; Compared to the novel, the movie was extremely underwhelming. And keep in mind, I've just read the first couple of chapters! More when I finish the book.
