Here is my entry for the
womenverse challenge Child's Play. We were tasked to take a woman in popular media and write a children's story about her.
Character: Katniss Everdeen
Fandom: The Hunger Games
Word Count: 298
Once upon a time, in a field of grass and stream, a little girl spent time with her father. She learned from him all that she could, saying "One day I'm going to be as strong and as brave and as good as him."
Then came the dark times. Her father was gone, her mother was lost, and her sister was counting on her to keep them safe. It was a hard job, being all alone with other people counting on you. Sometimes she didn't know how she would make it.
Eventually spring came, and she remembered what her father had taught her. She returned to the field of grass and stream, and things became easier. Using the plenty she found there, she was able to keep and feed her family. She had become strong through her suffering.
Then THEY came. They tried to take her sister with them, but she couldn't let her go to face the hardship THEY had in store. She stood up and shouted to take her sister's place. It would not be easy, but she would play the game THEY had in store if it meant saving those she loved.
The game was difficult. She lost friends, and wailed in sorrow. Others sought her death, and she was forced to kill in return. She found an ally in a boy from home, and used THEIR rules against THEM. She faced the end with hard earned bravery.
She was so strong and so brave that, against all odds, she won THEIR game. She and the boy survived to return home to their families and loved ones.
However, in the aftermath, all was for naught. She returned home only to face more difficult and deadly challenges. For you see, no one good can ever win.
(I want to explain a bit: I envisioned this as a tale told to the children in hushed whispers at, or near, their 12th birthday, right before they were eligible for reaping. Or, in a similar vein, what Katniss would eventually tell her children. In this way, I feel it still meets the criteria for the challenge)
