Spring Fever for
jentfic_remix. I really enjoyed the little snapshot of a moment with Sho and Ohno and wanted to expand on it. This is so stream-of-consciousness it kind of hurts a little. XD; I may come back and edit this later, but for now, I'm content with how it came out. (Apologies for the butchering of Japanese with the title.) Thanks for Sole for my last minute beta. <3
•••••
Ohno feels terrible, like a murky green-yellow blot on a normally comfortably blue palette. Usually he doesn't let things like head colds or aching muscles or dislocated shoulders get to him, but for some reason, the weather change from biting winds to blooming flowers always seems to do him in. Contrary to popular belief, Ohno doesn't frequently walk around in a haze of unawareness. He's (usually) fully aware of what's going on and (usually) has important things to share on the topic. Unfortunately, he's in a group with four other very opinionated and more-than-occasionally loud people. It's not that Ohno feels like his opinion doesn't matter or it won't be heard, but more that if it's important, he'll make it heard. Otherwise, he just lets the four of them duke it out while he doodles or thinks about what he'll have for lunch that day.
Sometimes, though, when they're in the middle of an argument (Jun calls them "creative differences of opinion," but Ohno's heard enough arguments to know the difference), Sho will look at him like Ohno's a real leader, seeking advice and counsel from their eldest and most venerated member. It's times like that that Ohno thinks he gets his reputation of being a bit spacey. It's not his fault Sho's eyes are all wide and piercing! And his mouth is, you know, full and pouty. And he's smiling at Ohno or frowning at Ohno or just looking at Ohno and asking what he thinks and Ohno's brain kind of shorts out so he doesn't say anything and his face goes kind of blank and the others just kind of laugh, but no, Ohno's still thinking about that mouth and those eyes and the way Sho's hair falls all fluffy-like and he wonders what it would be like to draw and then he wonders what it would be like to run his fingers through it so he does and no one questions because he's Ohno and that's what he does. Sho makes him think all manner of things that Ohno's pretty sure he shouldn't be thinking, but when he smiles, Ohno thinks of dark greens - the color that the grass turns when it's finally summer. The kind that invites you to come lie down and stay awhile, get comfortable on the bed of summer itself.
So Ohno's sitting in the middle of their dressing room, waiting for his ride to get there (hours, they said, apology in his manager's voice. He doesn't mind, he likes hanging out with the guys) and feeling terrible yet again. It's early spring and the leaves are just starting to pop out on the trees. Ohno can't wait for the first really warm day to take his sketchbook down to the park by his apartment and get some figure-drawing in. One of his neighbors has twin daughters who are just adorable and think Ohno is both incredibly cool and incredibly dorky. Cool because he's in Arashi with Matsumoto Jun (Ohno always imagines they're saying that with sparkles and hearts and floating flowers around Jun's name - if only they knew him they way he did, with cranky mornings and high maintenance hair routines. Jun is a bright, vibrant magenta in his mind). Dorky because he puts underwear on his head and plays superheroes with them and their little brother. Ohno thinks they're funny and wishes he had more time to play with them, but because he's an adult (and that kind of blows), he's got responsibilities that do not include entertaining the local children with his antics.
Ohno's still sitting in the dressing room and feeling crappy. He sneezes three, four, five times before finally wiping his nose with the back of his hand. Ohno thinks for a moment that that's kind of gross, but whatever, he just wipes his hand on Nino's pants and tries to play it off like he was just touching him all sweetly, the way Nino usually does to him. Nino's too smart for that, pulling back with a quick "gross, Oh-chan!" and leaping off the couch.
Ohno just goes back to his script (they keep bringing back Kaibutsu-kun for some reason, which he's not sure of, but he thinks it falls somewhere in the neighborhood of underwear-superheroes) and sneezes a few more times, wishing it was summer already and he could just enjoy the outside without it trying to kill him. It's a few moments of reading-but-not-reading before Ohno realizes he's heard his name more than once in the quiet chatter from Nino and Sho. He glances over, catches Sho's eye and smiles. Ohno tries not to let the green-eyed-monster of jealousy well up inside him, but it does against his will. He tries to remind himself that Nino is just Nino. He flirts with everyone, including and most especially Ohno himself. And Sho is Nino's best friend, right? (Or is that Aiba? Ohno's never sure anymore. He does know pretty solidly that Nino wants in Jun's pants and he suspects that he's actually gotten there more than once, but he tries not to think about that too much.)
It's somewhere between Nino's second chuckle and Sho's awkward laugh that Ohno realizes that maybe he might kind of like Sho. And not just like a friend, which he does, because Sho is a good person and always helpful and one time he brought Ohno soup when he had the flu (that Sho did not make himself, though Ohno would have eaten it anyway). But more like...he wants to know what Sho's lips feel like. If they really are as soft as they look. He wants to know what those muscles look like when they're working him to his release. Ohno wants to know what Sho's eyes say when they're looking at him all sweet and wide. And he wants to know what they're saying when they go dark and predatory.
It kind of startles him when he realizes this and Ohno sneezes a few more times before hanging his head over the back of the couch in misery. Ohno's not one to let something like falling for one of his best friends get him down, though. Not when it's Sho. Ohno can't imagine a better person to fall for, though he might be slightly biased in that regard. So he doesn't let it phase him for a moment. They're still friends and maybe one day, Ohno will do something to change that. Maybe. One day. After he's talked to Aiba and gotten some feedback. And maybe Jun.
Ohno takes some allergy medicine and relaxes on the couch for a bit, floating in and out of a nap - his mind creating a painting he only wishes he could recreate in real life. He wakes up at one point to find Sho hovering over him, tucking a blanket in around his shoulders and smiling at him fondly. Ohno's heart lurches in his chest and he smiles back, resisting the urge to pull Sho down and feel those lips for the first time. Instead he mumbles a "thank you" and slides back into his dreams.
He's not sure how much later it is when he finally sits up and stares about the room. Sho is the only one left now, reading his third paper of the day (Ohno thinks this one might be in English). Ohno's head isn't feeling quite so pound-y and he hasn't sneezed in ages. Finally starting to feel better, Ohno looks over at Sho and almost melts into the couch. Sho's concentrating on his paper, his brow furrowed and lips moving noiselessly as he sounds out the words in his head. Ohno's overcome with a warmth in his chest that he's not sure he can control. And his next actions assure him he honestly couldn't if he tried.
"Sho," he says, rising from the couch a bit stiffly.
"Yes?" Sho replies. He sounds a bit breathless, which doesn't really make sense to Ohno, but he lets it go in favor of having those eyes on him again.
"If I tell you something, will you promise not to be upset?" As soon as the words come out of Ohno's mouth, they feel wrong. He's not sure that's what he meant to say at all and he doesn't know how to make them sound right. He's not very good with words.
"Sure, go ahead." Sho's face is open and honest, but something lurks behind his eyes. Something almost scared or worried. Ohno sways on the spot a bit at the heaviness of what he's about to say and what he might do to their group, but Sho jumps up all concerned-like and Ohno's stomach flips a bit.
"Um, I just - I...." he stumbles, looking up at Sho. He takes a deep breath, readies his thoughts....and then sneezes a handful of times. Stupid spring ruining his moment.
"You okay there, allergy nose?" Sho asks with a smile and Ohno completely misses the next thing out of his mouth because his plan is changing. If there ever was a plan to begin with.
Ohno glances around the room and takes a step forward, placing his hands on Sho's shoulders and leaning up to brush their lips together. He hums a bit happily into the kiss, pleasantly surprised that Sho's lips are, in fact, just as soft as they look. He's still thinking about what color kisses would be if they could be painted (maybe a peachy-orange? or a blue so light it's almost white?) when he pulls back and tentatively meets Sho's gaze through his lashes.
"So, you're not upset?" he asks, which even to him seems kind of silly given the way Sho is looking at him like that and the fact that Sho didn't deck him the moment he put his lips on his (though Ohno kind of assumed that as a group, they were far past the whole PDA thing).
Sho's laugh startles Ohno a bit, but he finds himself smiling back, nose scrunching up. They stand there smiling at each other for a moment before Sho's eyes turn dark and he's leaning back in for what Ohno hopes is the second of many, many kisses, when Ohno's stupid allergies come back and he sneezes....all over Sho's shoulder.
Ohno thinks embarrassment might be a deep purple, so dark it's almost black. Or maybe a harsh red, glaring and vibrant and knocking out any other color. He's in the middle of apologizing profusely and trying to dab his spit off of Sho when Sho's kissing him again. It's different this time, with both of them actively involved, and Ohno completely forgets about deep purples and vibrant reds and is back in a happy place of peaches and light blues. He thinks for a moment that maybe spring isn't all that bad and when Sho puts his hands on Ohno's hips and turns his head just like that, Ohno's world explodes in a rainbow of color and he finally understands why people like spring so much.
Even if it is trying to kill him.
