Summary: Sungmin thought it would be an ordinary bus ride.
Glancing out of the window, Sungmin idly watched the line of passengers board the crowded bus. An old lady with a plastic bag of fruits. A young couple making eyes at each other. A wide-eyed toddler desperately clutching his mother’s hand. A gorgeous young man engrossed in his hand-held game.
Wait a second. Gorgeous!?
Sitting up straight in his seat, Sungmin craned his neck for another glimpse of the tall, mysterious stranger with brown hair. Well, who would have thought this day would turn out so promising?
Yet, the stranger seemed to have disappeared in the crowd. Frowning, Sungmin turned his attention back to his mp3 player, all the while recalling the stranger’s soft brown eyes and seemingly endless legs.
Suddenly, his phone rang. Hastily reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone, Sungmin answered the call. Without even as much as a preliminary hello, his best friend Eunhyuk immediately started chattering. “Oh my god, Sungmin! You will not believe who I just saw. I was walking along the street and I saw the most delectable figure in front of me and oh my god, guess who it was! Yes of course, you’re absolutely right, Lee Donghae! And oh my god I totally made a fool of myself because he turned around to pick up something from the floor, and when I saw him looking straight at me, I freaked out and dropped my bag and um okay this is the part where you have to remain calm, alright?”
“Hyuk. I haven’t said a single word since I picked up the phone. Breathe, will you?” Sungmin said in amusement.
“Alright alright I’m breathing, but you need to promise me that you’ll remain calm. Sungmin, you remember that we’re best friends right? I even cared for you through the night when you had a fever last summer… And well, I might have accidentally kinda sorta dropped your guitar case on the floor as well but I swear nothing happened to your guitar apart from a tiny chip that’s barely noticeable! I am so sorry Min, please don’t kill me or my pet fish I swear I’ll be your slave for a month!”
“You WHAT!? Lee Hyukjae, you are dead meat. You dropped my precious pink guitar even though I entrusted it to your care after school? Don’t you even dare to squirm your way out of this, you sneaky useless bas -“
“I can’t believe he had the audacity to hang up on me”, muttered Sungmin to himself.
“Having a rough day?” asked a voice right next to him. Startled, Sungmin looked up and stared straight into a pair of warm brown eyes. All thoughts of murdering Eunhyuk and cutting him up into little pieces immediately vanishing from his mind, all Sungmin could think about was how the mysterious stranger had somehow found his way to Sungmin’s seat despite the throngs of people crowding the back.
“I’m Kyuhyun, and I couldn’t help overhearing your conversation with your friend. Sorry, but you were yelling pretty loudly.” Blushing furiously, Sungmin sheepishly said “Oops, you heard everything?” Chuckling, Kyuhyun stepped closer to Sungmin. “You’re Lee Sungmin, aren’t you? And you’re the President of the Guitar Club.” Stunned, Sungmin’s mouth fell open. “How did you know? Do I know you from somewhere?” “Are you sure you don’t know me? We’re in the same Math class, after all,” smiled Kyuhyun. That’s right, no wonder he’d thought the stranger looked rather familiar. Although Sungmin really couldn’t be blamed for not recognizing him immediately. For one, he normally had his head on the table and barely paid attention in Math class. For another, even when he did try to pay attention, he was too befuddled by the seemingly nonsensical alphanumerical writings on the whiteboard to notice anything else.
Seeing the flash of recognition in Sungmin’s eyes, Kyuhyun laughed. “So your friend dropped your guitar on the floor?” Groaning, Sungmin recalled the actions of a certain Lee Hyukjae. “My roommate and best friend, to be exact. I swear I’m going to kill his pet fish in return for this”, said Sungmin with a slightly sadistic gleam in his eyes.
“Remind me never to get on your bad side, Sungmin-shii,” joked Kyuhyun. Laughing lightly, Sungmin shook his head and said “I doubt you’ll ever do something like that, right, Kyuhyun-shii? As long as you don’t do anything to my guitar, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever suffer my wrath.”
Just then, very familiar whitewashed buildings rolled into view and Sungmin realized his stop was approaching. With a hint of disappointment lacing his words, Sungmin reluctantly said “Oh dear, this is my stop. It was very nice talking to you, Kyuhyun-shii, I hope to see you around some time soon.”
“What a coincidence, Sungmin-shii. This is my stop too. Who would have thought we live so close to each other?”, mused Kyuhyun. Pushing past the people in the aisle, Sungmin and Kyuhyun alighted from the bus with twin sighs of relief upon breathing in the freshness of the air, which was a welcome change from the stuffy, musty air that pervaded the bus.
“So listen, I know we just met, but would you like to grab a cup of coffee with me?”, asked Kyuhyun almost shyly. “I’ve actually always noticed you in Math class, Sungmin-shii, and - I’ve always admired your musical talents. I hope you don’t think I’m odd or anything.” Catching his breath, Sungmin felt his heartbeat increasing all of a sudden. “S-sure, I’d love to. You can drop the formalities if you wish, we’re the same age after all, Kyuhyun-ah.”
Beaming, Kyuhyun looked at Sungmin and said “Of course, Sungmin-shii. I mean, Sungmin-ah. Shall we go?” With a smile so wide that it could light up the whole town, Sungmin glanced over at Kyuhyun and nodded happily.
In that moment, at the sight of Sungmin’s brilliant smile, Kyuhyun swore that he fell a little more in love with the boy who had captured his heart from the very start.
