Summary: Had the law of physics been followed, Bella's suicide attempt would have been infinitely more serious...

Charlie Swan felt like the world was ending.

It sounded cliché... Trite. But sitting in the hospital room with his eighteen-year-old daughter hooked up to a respirator smacked of Hell on Earth to Charlie.

He'd spent the last four months running on the sheer willpower to keep his daughter from slipping away. He'd tried so hard to remind her that she was loved and some idiot boy wasn't worth the pain she was causing herself.

Now, because of a boy, his baby girl was in the hospital with a broken neck.

Jacob was the one who found her. He admitted that he was planning on taking Isabella cliff diving later on. He admitted that he'd shown her the spot he, Sam, and Embry took turns jumping from. Jacob also admitted that he had no idea Isabella was so "sad." Charlie had to admit-seeing her smile and laugh with Jacob had renewed his hope of her moving on. She hadn't had a nightmare in weeks.

Charlie looked from his daughter's ashen face to his reflection in the cold cup of coffee he'd been holding for the last two hours. His hair was a wreck, he needed to shave, and his eyes were swollen and felt gritty. Right after he'd gotten the call from Jacob about Isabella's suicide attempt, Charlie called Reneé.

He spent more time calming her down (saying it wasn't her fault that "Bella met that Edward kid in the first place" because of her relationship with Phil) than he spent thinking about how this entire catastrophe made him feel.

Isabella jumped from a cliff side, landed on her back when she hit the water, and broke her neck. The doctors said it was likely that she'd be paralyzed from the neck down but told Charlie he needed to "be optimistic." He was supposed to be optimistic that the swelling would eventually go down enough that his daughter would be paralyzed from the waist instead.

So how did he feel?

Powerless.

As he stared at the bags under his eyes in his wavering blackened reflection, Charlie Swan felt like his world was ending.
