Summary: Charlie reacts like any cop would to a home invasion.
Charlie reached to hang up his gun belt as he switched the lights on. In that second where he realized one of the windows was busted open and there was someone sitting on his sofa he'd already drawn his gun and flicked off the safety.
"Hands up," he said. "Now I've had a long goddamn day and I'm not in the mood for some stupid high school dare, so let's make this quick."
"Charlie, it's me," said the intruder. She complied with his order and laced her thin fingers together on top of her head as she turned to face him.
"Alice Cullen?" he didn't lower the gun. "Pardon my French, but what the fuck are you thinking-breaking into my house? Where's your dad?"
"Carlisle is still in Alaska."
"That's one answer. Mind enlightening me on the other?"
"Would you mind lowering the gun, Charlie?" Alice asked and stepped closer at the same time.
He frowned. "It's 'Chief Swan' to you, kid, and I'm still a bit perplexed on the whole business of you breaking into my house. So excuse me for being cautious."
She looked him in the eyes and Charlie felt that same gut-sensation of "this-is-not-right" he always did around the Cullens. Her eyes were much darker than usual and it raised the hairs on the back of his neck.
"I heard about some bad news and decided you needed someone," Alice excused.
"You were in Alaska with your dad, heard that my friend Harry Clearwater died, and then-"
Alice stopped him with a wave and shoved his two-handed grip to the side of her head so she could get as close to him as physically possible. "I'm not talking about some dead Native, Charlie, I'm talking about your daughter!" she snapped
Charlie felt his world end and nearly dropped his gun.
"What?" he whispered.
"Bella. She jumped off a cliff during the storm and drowned."
Charlie used his knee and shoulder to shove Alice away from him, but she wouldn't budge. He was frightened and she only slid closer to him-her icy hands twisting against his scalp and the back of his uniform shirt.
"Shhh," she exhaled. "Everything is going to be okay."
She caressed him like a child and Charlie shuddered.
"I'll make everything better," Alice said with her cold mouth trailing from his ear down to his neck. Once she started to ease off the tips of her toes to reach, Charlie tried to push her away again. She was off balance enough for him to bring the handgun between them before she could regain her footing.
The muzzle pressed up under her chin, but Alice Cullen just smiled at him. Charlie swallowed the lump in his throat and managed, despite his fear, to call forth his best "I'm-the-sheriff-'round-these-parts" voice.
"Alice, now you let go of me or I'm gonna be forced to do something that'll result in an upsetting phone conversation with your dad."
"Dad?"
Relief flooded through Charlie at the sound of his daughter's voice, but he refused to take his eyes off the main threat in the room. "Bells, honey, go upstairs and pack a bag. We're staying over with the Clearwater family tonight."
"Alice?!" Bella snuck around his father's shoulder and took in the image of the vampire in the living room-releasing a death grip on Charlie even as she eased backward and stepped on broken glass from the nearest window. "You broke in? How'd you get-why are you here?!"
"I took a taxi. And you're supposed to be dead..."
"That's it," Charlie snapped and shoved Alice as hard as he could to get her away from him and his daughter. "You shut your mouth," he pointed his gun at Alice's forehead. "Isabella, I told you to go upstairs and pack a bag."
Shocked, Bella nodded. "Yes, Daddy," she murmured and almost tripped on her way upstairs.
Charlie Swan leveled Alice with a glare. He'd never been so angry in his entire life. "You get the fuck out of my house and stay away from my daughter. If I see you here again, I will not hesitate to put a bullet between those creepy-ass eyes of yours. Are we clear, Alice Cullen?"
She hissed at him.
Fucking hissed.
"I packed you some stuff too, Dad," Bella shouted as she ran back downstairs. The image that greeted her of Alice (normally the paragon of demure and all things girly) being so monstrous was enough to get her mind back where it should have been in the first place. The little brunette was dangerous and so was her entire family. "Jake should be waiting for us," she whispered.
"Get in the cruiser and wait for me."
Another involuntary "Yes, Daddy," popped out of Bella before she could think of it.
Alice took her eyes off Charlie to watch Bella run through the front door.
It was enough of a distraction for the Chief of Police to rear back and pistol whip her across the temple. The blow stunned her-she never expected Charlie to actually do anything about her after she'd "shown" him that she was stronger than he imagined. Alice reflexively snarled as she turned back to face her new opponent-hunger burned the back of her throat and instincts had taken her reason hours ago.
Charlie was already halfway to his cruiser with his gun belt back on and a new determination in his gait.
Keep Isabella safe. Tell Billy about the Cullens. Ask for sanctuary on the Rez.
Charlie Swan was not an idiot.
