Summary: Charlie deals with Edward's trespassing the way he should have. As a cop, father, and man with ties to the Quileute community.
Charlie Swan woke to the sound of his daughter speaking to someone entirely too familiar. Since she'd lost her ever-loving mind in the Cullen kid's absence, her father had returned to his habit of sleeping light and leaving his bedroom door open.
He'd told Edward Cullen to back the hell off.
Charlie had warned him that there would be consequences if he came back.
Keeping his mind deliberately blank (Leah mentioned the rest of the pack talking about Edward's weird-ass ability to read minds), Charlie crept downstairs in his flannel pajama pants, grabbed his service pistol, snagged his cell phone, and snuck outside his own home to call for back up.
He hit a speed dial number and only had to wait for it to ring once when Leah Clearwater answered.
"Trouble?"
"Mm-hmm."
"Inside the house right now?"
"Yup."
"I'll there in two. Go scare the shit out of him and I'll meet you outside," Leah instructed. Over the phone, Charlie could hear her getting ready to wolf-out.
"I'm gonna shoot him," he decided aloud.
Leah smothered a laugh and hung up.
Charlie closed his cell phone and returned to the kitchen. Done with the act of subterfuge, he checked his safety and pulled the slide back on his gun to chamber a round.
The sound made someone upstairs jolt.
Charlie padded upstairs and aimed the gun at the space between Bella's bedroom door and the floor. He knew she'd locked her room when he showed up, but it wasn't a deadbolt lock. And Charlie Swan had kicked in a fair amount of locked doors in his time.
Muscles tense, he shifted his center of gravity and kicked the door open with his bare foot.
Edward Cullen was sitting on his daughter's bed.
"Don't you dare move unless I tell you to, you son of a bitch," he warned.
"Chief Swan-"
"Charlie-"
"STOP SPEAKING," Charlie bellowed. "I told you that I didn't want you in this house ever again. I warned you that you would be trespassing if I saw you again-"
"-Charlie, you can't keep him from me. I'm eighteen!" Bella insisted.
"My grandfather built this house and my father left it to me in his will. This is my home and what I say to whomever is in it stands."
Bella stumbled out of bed and moved over to her closet to grab her bathrobe. "I'm an adult! I can-"
Charlie interrupted her and started edging Edward toward the stairwell with his gun sighted on the creep's forehead. "As long as you live in this house you will live by my rules. And right now, Mr. Cullen is trespassing. Downstairs, now," he ordered.
Bella was either too tired to try and come up with some pseudo-logic to get herself and Edward out of the situation, or she'd just decided something incredibly stupid.
Charlie waited until they were at the kitchen door that opened out to the yard before he spoke again. "Edward, do you know that I am within my right as a homeowner and father to shoot you right here in this kitchen? I specifically told you to never set foot in this house again and I found you in my daughter's bedroom. Did you climb in through her window?"
"I'm confused, are you still being rhetorical?" Edward asked with a smug grin.
"Don't try and be cute, asshole. I'm holding a loaded gun, the safety is off, and I am well within my rights to shoot your sorry ass."
Edward opened his mouth to say something else, but Charlie cut him off again when he saw a familiar shadow on the lawn. "Say another word and I will shoot."
"A gun won't do-"
Charlie squeezed the trigger. With a loud "crack," the 45 caliber round blasted a hole through the fabric of Edward's stupidly expensive T-shirt and flattened against the density of whatever it was that made up his skin. The spent casing flew back and burned Charlie's bare collarbone. Beyond the ringing in his own ears, Charlie could hear Bella shriek in surprise. Edward bore an expression of genuine shock that Chief Swan actually shot him and failed to keep up that thin human guise as the useless bullet fell to the tiled floor.
Out in the yard, Leah Clearwater (still in her wolf form) barked a laugh and alerted the vampire to her presence.
"Oh, I know a gun won't do much to your kind," Charlie said. He smiled humorlessly and shrugged one shoulder. "It's more of a distraction. See, my grandfather married one of the Quileute tribal elders so this land you're trespassing on is within the limits of the treaty. I'm gonna go ahead and assume by the stupid look on your face that you know which treaty I'm talking about."
"Don't…"
"I don't really have to wonder how many people have begged the same of you, vampire," Charlie snapped. "Step outside. Bella, if you don't get behind me in the next five seconds, there will be consequences."
She reluctantly shuffled behind him-too confused to think of any possible "consequences" her father might mean.
"Edward Cullen-or whatever your real name is-under Quileute Law, I am authorizing my Deputy to do what she feels necessary to eliminate the risk you pose to my family and the welfare of those near to me."
"Deputy?" Edward started to ask but cut himself off when the large wolf stepped between him and Charlie. She swiveled one ear back and waited for the sound of Charlie's bare feet backing up a few yards before she attacked the intruder.
Bella choked on a scream and hid her face against her father's bared back as Leah's large teeth ripped through vampire flesh like a chew toy. Once Charlie took up his stance in the "safe zone," he didn't take his eyes off the spectacle on his lawn.'
Missing an arm and a large portion of his left side, Edward Cullen feebly tried to ward off Leah's ruthless attacks. At one point he tried to run off the property line but got a foot chomped off for his attempts. Leah continued to bite and tear at him until his remains began to crumble into a greenish-white powder.
Satisfied, she shifted back into her human form and nodded at Charlie. "I'll tell Billy what happened, Charlie."
"Thank you, Leah."
She smirked and crossed her arms over her bared breasts. "I can't believe you fuckin' shot him," she laughed.
"Well… He snuck into my teenaged daughter's bedroom. I own several guns. The warning is more than just implied," Charlie said. He then looked away from her. "Leah, you're naked."
Her smile widened. "Oh, I know," she said.
"Stop that. Go tell Billy what happened and make sure you let those boys know you kicked ass all on your lonesome."
"WILCO, Chief Swan. One thing before I leave?"
He looked back at her and raised an eyebrow in lieu of speaking.
"Do I get a special 'deputy' badge now?"
"Leah?"
"Yeah?"
"Get outta here before I take you in for indecent exposure."
She laughed, bit back a comment about just how "indecent" she could get, and phased back into her wolf form. With an easy loping stride, Leah Clearwater headed back to La Push.
Once Leah's grey tail faded out of view, Charlie looked from the pulverized vampire remains in his front yard to his shivering teenaged daughter. He sighed through his nose. "I need to call Dr. Gerandy," he mumbled.
