One of my favourite things about life in Tokyo is how easy it is to escape the city and go explore the countryside, without needing to rent a carJust train hopping and getting off at random stations is sure to lead to interesting experiences. You'll certainly see things you didn't expect. The Japanese countryside is fascinating ( Read more... )

That ease of exploration without having to use a car is maybe one of the most envious aspects of Japan. I WISH we had such awesome inter-city train service here. The only place where the inter-city train works even somewhat well is the Northeast corridor, from about Philadelphia up through to Portland, Maine. That includes Washington, New York and Boston. Everywhere else is...bad to very bad, basically. Like yeah you can take the train between cities--I could hop on the train right now and get to, say, New Orleans. But it would take 13 hours if you go direct! A flight between the two cities is about an hour and a half for much cheaper.

Also those roller slides look both a little spooky and a little awesome at the same time. I remember roller slides from exactly one place in my childhood, but it was a really cool indoor playground type place that also had an arcade. Did you ride any of the roller slides?

Oh and those...planters with tusks or whatever that is at the end? Nightmare fuel! Hahahaha

Whoa, those are long roller slides. The concept is pretty standard here and you see a lot of them, though none even half as long...
And free-to-use binoculars on viewpoints have become a rarity, it seems ... especially in touristy destinations. I used to bring my own binoculars when I knew a viewpoints would be by the wayside, but nowadays I often just use the zoom on my camera for a closer look, even when not actually taking a picture.
