Writing Exercises

Mar 06, 2008 04:26

I just got back from work at the Wildcat. Check the time stamp for this post.

Anyway, I decided to post some of the writing exercises assigned as homework for my Media Arts class this semester. Since they are lengthy, I will hide them behind cuts.

Our first script was due today. Here is the biography for my protagonist.

Name: Anthony Terrance Halliburton.
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Race: Caucasian
Occupation: Data Analyst at Teradyne Industries

With short, well trimmed black hair and dark, hazel eyes, Halliburton borders between mildly dashing but somewhat forgettable. He stands a little over six feet. He is well built, agile, and not too stocky. He is well groomed and looks good in a suit and tie. His smile is soft, though he rarely displays his impressive teeth, the result of intense orthodontic work as a child. He goes to the gym three times a week and studies Hap-Kido on Saturdays. He has an unhealthy addiction to energy drinks, which he fostered during college and trade school, loves fried chicken, and brings Pyramid Apricot Ale to any party. He cooks at home a lot, eats well, but loves going to Arby’s.

He makes good money at Teradyne, though he saves a fair amount of it in savings. He has a nice condo near a suburban sprawl. It is quiet, which he likes, but conveniently placed so he and his friends don’t have to travel far to go anywhere cool. He splurges occasionally, often on designer clothes and Xbox 360 games.

He maintains in touch with his family and visits them once every few months in Washington. He has a brother and sister who each get by pursuing their dreams. His sister is a network executive for public television, while his brother does business consulting. His parents are both retired social workers enjoying the peace and quiet of Lynwood.

Halliburton balances his personal time and social life fairly well, with a slight emphasis on the former. He’s equally content staying at home with a beer and the TV as he is going out and causing a ruckus with his friends, who mostly do freelance work; photography, consulting, journalism, etc. He isn’t above not acting his age, especially at 2 a.m. inside the mini-golf course after it’s closed. It’s all in jest.

He likes going to dive bars and dance clubs just the same in his free time. He doesn’t enjoy art shows or movie theaters. He’d rather go out and have a drink or dinner on a date; old school. He has hooked up with a few of his coworkers. His other female pursuits come from friends of friends, and on one occasion so far, a girl from a bar. He is not looking for anything serious, as he has a hard time taking relationships seriously for long periods of time. He eventually gets bored or complacent, and moves on.

Halliburton is usually calm and collected, never boisterous in conversations. He often takes a few seconds to respond to less than irrelevant questions. He doesn’t like talking about himself unless prompted. He can hold his own in a conversation, but doesn’t care for politics or global events. He’s even more jaded with celebrity gossip. He talks pop culture a lot, mostly music and TV. He rarely flies off the handle, unless it’s a personal attack or an attack on his family and friends. He’s very protective of those who cannot protect himself. Still, he can occasionally be shallow, rude, tactless, and blunt. These traits often cause friction when dealing with strangers in public. He is overtly cynical of strangers, most celebrities, and politicians. He launches into overly critical, mostly nonsensical, rants about the state of the world today when he’s drunk.

Halliburton is generally a well-mannered, charming man who doesn’t take life too seriously, but doesn’t slack too much either. He works hard; he gets things done right, and runs his mouth when he’s had too much to drink.
