Riley Finn had seen some fairly crazy and insane things during his life--being stationed on the Hellmouth, dating the Slayer, and working on a mobile demon hunting squad ensured that--but he was almost certain he had never seen anything quite like the small down of Eureka before. Nestled in the Pacific Northwest, there was nothing to call attention to the fact that it was probably the most dangerous place that Riley had lived, Sunnydale included.
“It’s your own fault for moving here,” Sheriff Jack Carter noted wryly one day when he overheard Riley muttering under his breath as the Army was called to potentially diffuse another dangerous situation. Riley had met Sheriff Carter on his first day stationed by Eureka while dealing with one of their scientists and a force field, and Riley viewed him, Dr. Blake, and Dr. Deacon as the sole voices of sanity in this whole mess. Deputy Lupo had her moments, but to be honest, she scared him a little, although she and Sam got along scarily well.
“We only moved here for the schools, I swear,” Riley deadpanned, meeting Carter’s eyes. Carter gave a small laugh and shook his head.
“Sure, Agent Finn,” he replied. “And it had nothing to do with the cushy sounding job description.” Riley remained silent. “There’s a reason they write it that way. It gets people like you and Jo begging to be assigned here before you realize that this place is far more dangerous and unpredictable than almost any other thing you could imagine.”
“Trust me, it only took me that first hour or so on the job to figure that one out,” Riley replied with a rueful shake of his head. “And for me and Sam to be thinking that this place is a little beyond insane is really saying something.”
Before Carter could respond, all hell began to break lose as it only could in Eureka.
