Watching the Warehouse verse. Response to the prompt "fear" for
25crossovers Buffy waited until Xander, Faith, and Willow had left their impromptu little meeting with Giles about Dawn’s new assignment before closing the door and turning to face her former Watcher.
“Does Dawn know?” she asked, trying to keep her voice even. “Did you give her this little briefing before she left for South Dakota?”
“I gave her a general background, yes,” Giles answered, looking up from the report he had started reading.
“But none of the specifics you just gave us.”
The lengthy pause was all the answer that Buffy needed to know that Giles hadn’t told Dawn anything about the artifact collection and storage aspect of her new assignment, or if he had, it hadn’t been much with the substantive details.
“Why?”
Her question hung heavily in the air between them. Even though it was years later, things between them hadn’t fully returned to normal after those last few months in Sunnydale. Neither of them talked about it, but the history was still there. It never really came up except in times like these where Buffy couldn’t help but get the feeling he was leaving out something important for reasons he wouldn’t share with the class. It might have been old hurt talking most of the time, but then situations like these came up and she was back at square one with her trust issues.
“If the Regents decided that, for whatever reason, that they don’t want a representative of the Council, especially one as high ranking as your sister, having her know too many specifics about the warehouse could compromise her safety,” Giles explained stiffly, getting to his feet and moving to the front of his desk. “Given the situation with James MacPherson, I couldn’t take that risk.”
“So, instead she’s walking in semi-blind to a place that collects the weird and destructive,” Buffy said, getting to the other point that had worried her during Giles’ talk about what the warehouse did. “Which sounds quite a lot like the Key. What if they decide she’s all artifact-y and decide to store her?”
Giles sighed, but somehow managed not to rub his forehead, much to Buffy’s surprise.
“I took that into consideration, but I don’t believe it will become an issue given both its inactivity and the current management of the warehouse,” Giles replied, leaning against the front of his desk. “And we needed an experienced Watcher for this assignment. While I considered Xander, given his history with magical artifacts, he would be more at risk than your sister.”
Buffy couldn’t help but smile a little at Giles’ assessment of letting Xander loose in the warehouse, but it quickly faded.
“I’m still not comfortable with this, Giles.”
Dawn often accused Buffy of easily slipping into overprotective mama-bear mode, and while Buffy could own up to it on certain occasions, she still felt somewhat justified on this one. It might have been the whole Giles not giving them all the information. It might have been the fact that she felt like Dawn was walking into the lion’s den with her Key-ness. Or, it could be something else altogether. Either way, she didn’t like it.
“I wouldn’t send Dawn if I didn’t have the utmost confidence in her abilities,” Giles answered, trying to sound reassuring but falling a little short. “She’ll do fine, Buffy.”
Buffy bit the inside of her cheek to keep down another retort. It wouldn’t do any good now. Dawn was already in South Dakota, which left Buffy with not much more say in the matter.
“So how do you know so much about the warehouse, if they’re as big into the secret keeping as us?” Buffy asked as she walked towards the door, deciding to change the subject to something a little less likely to cause conflict between them.
“Family business,” Giles replied, going back down to sit at his desk. “My mother’s side worked at Warehouse 12 before it closed.”
“Gotcha.” She gave Giles as big of a smile as she could muster and opened the door. “I’ll see you later. I need to talk with Rona and Caridad about assignments for some of the new girls.”
Walking away from Giles’ office, Buffy thought through the meeting once more in her head. Maybe she could call in a few favors she was owed and see what they could tell her about the Warehouse. She considered it for about thirty seconds before letting it go with a sigh. No. She’d be a good girl and let Dawn handle this on her own, even though it went against all big sister protective instincts. Wasn’t Dawn always complaining that Buffy never gave her a chance to prove herself?
Still, it wouldn’t hurt to call up Riley and see what he knew.
