PERSONALITY
It's easy to think of Logan as an animal. He's quick to fight, quick to drink, quick to love. He has probably killed more people single-handedly than anyone else on the planet and is considered by many governments to be the most dangerous man alive. Which is ironic, considering that it was they who made him the way he is now.
Logan is constantly aware of the beast inside him and alternates between fighting it and letting is loose, but in the end he is always looking to better himself. He has been alive for a long time, seen a lot of things, and still has not lost hope. He is a samurai, honourable and traditional. He is a soldier, ruthless and cold. He is a lover, tender and kind. He has a fondness for steak and beer as much as sushi and sake. He doesn't hold stock with many traditional religions, but he is very spiritual, looking for meaning to his long and painful life as well as a way to become a better man. He meditates, but never prays. He has simple tastes, but a great appreciation for breauty. He tends to surprise people. Most people only come to respect Logan after getting to know him for a long time. If someone misunderstands his character, he isn't one to correct them. People can believe what they want about him, but it won't change who he is.
The nickname that was given to him originally as a teenager and then again by Department H was Wolverine, a short and stinky animal that could nevertheless take down a fully grown deer and never stopped digging until it reached its goal. He was born with the name James Howlett, but rejected it after the emergence of his claws and took on the name of the man who killed his family, Logan.
Logan's sense of justice often leads to violent and bloody retribution to those who harm himself or those close to him. If you attack Logan you'd better be ready for the consequences. Considering the fact that he can heal from any wound, has an unbreakable metal bonded to his skeleton, metal claws that come out of his arms, and has been in more battles than he can count, it's probably not a good idea to pick a fight. The law usually doesn't come into the picture for him - like the traditional rogue cowboy, he comes in conflict with the police even when he's doing their job for them. He is the best at what he does, and what he does isn't very nice.
He used to smoke - cigars, cigarillos, and cigarettes - on a regular basis, but was eventually convinced to quit by Kitty Pryde, a girl he considered almost a daughter. His daughter figures have had a lot of influence over his life and he always regrets not having been able to take better care of Amiko, his foster-daughter, after the death of Mariko. He often acts as a mentor to the younger people around him, but demands and expects a lot from them. This is especially apparent with Jubilee, whose crush on him he tolerated as he strove to give her a sense of values and skills to survive in the world after an undisciplined childhood.
Logan treats his friends like family, and what he will do for family is more than most. Despite the fact that he can appear a loner, he has a sense of responsibility that is unrivalled - he would probably consider himself responsible for a kid he bumped into the street. Giri, honour, or just a father complex. Guilt and sadness for many things weighs heavily on him, but he doesn't often allow himself a chance to mope. Logan has a soft spot for women, children, and animals, but has no sympathy for those who are capable of making their own decisions and have made bad ones. Even after regaining his memories he has no peace from the demons of his past, but he makes his way as best he can. He tends to keep himself to himself, but isn't above asking for help or offering it. If possible, he never wants anyone else to have to go through anything like his life, and attempts to protect any innocence he finds.
He has also had many lovers over the years, although after a few special ones he has tried hard to keep things casual. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and when he falls in love it is the real deal. Despite the fact that most of his relationships have ended in tragedy, he has never stopped loving quickly and deeply. He's not considered the most attractive man, usually described as "short and hairy animal", but a certain type of woman never fails to be attracted to him. He, on the other hand, never fails to be attracted to strong, self-posessed women. He is always a gentleman when it comes to the fairer sex, but that means treating women with respect rather than pity.
Probably the most influential person in Logan's life would be his "true love" Mariko Yashida. When Logan fell in love with Mariko he soon realized that he wasn't good enough for her in many ways, and if he wished to win her hand in marriage he would have to become a better person as well as better schooled in the ways of bushido. When remembering all the loves of his life, Mariko is usually numbered first. The difference between a casual relationship and a deep love for Logan is often whether or not the woman in question makes him strive to better himself. In a way, he is always reaching towards enlightenment.
Logan has been known to drive off the road and suffer serious injury to himself rather than hit a deer crossing the road, and he helped the fearsome Wendigo out of a bear trap and then lured the hunters away. He respects and enjoys the company of animals because they have simple wants and needs and he can identify with that. That won't stop him from hunting for food or practice, or staring down an alpha male in a fight, but he often treats animals like equals without personifying them. When thrown into a pit of starving lions, the lions are more likely to take his side than tear him apart. Although Logan has connections and friends across the globe (and in a handful of other dimensions and planets) he is often plagued by the urge to leave and go off on his own into the wilderness. He can only handle society for a certain amount of time before leaving and going back to nature.
He appears reckless and stupid, tending towards work boots, worn jeans, flannel shirts, leather jackets, and cowboy hats, but in actuality has all the cunning and skills of a international spy crossed with a ninja. He speaks and understands several languages fluently and reads often and quickly on diverse subjects. He hasn't been alive for nearly a century for nothing, and he has spent most of his life in one war or another (WWI, WWII, Cold War, Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Civil War, Secret Invasion). His hunting and tracking skills are unmatched. He is a canny tactician and knows the value of stealth, but in the end his skills as a berserker are his trump card. He doesn't like letting loose to the animal within, especially when he blacks out and completely relinquishes control of himself to instinct, but sometimes that's the only way to win a fight. He does enjoy a good fight, and sometimes goes out of his way to start them, but he doesn't like that he enjoys it. He tells himself that he was changed, that he was forced to become this kind of person, but he secretly fears that he was always this way - vicious, brutal, and animalistic.
He has a tendency to call people by abbreviations of their first name: the most powerful mutant mind on earth was often called Chuck, the Universe-consuming Phoenix was Jeanie. He has connections across the Marvel U and has met a lot of people - at the very least, others will recognize the uniform, which has been on the television or the cover of enough magazines as an X-Men or Avenger for it to become a symbol.
Logan has been through a lot, but he will never stop once he has his mind set on something, and he will never turn away from a fight worth fighting. Honour, justice, and love dictate his actions. He will take younger, more inexperienced people under his wing even if they don't realize it. At the end of the day he's a loner, a modern cowboy, but he's always drawn back to society to help people.
