[I]t is very hard for laymen to tell scientific ignorance from scientific fact. Because ignorance is necessarily expressed in broader, sketchier, and less qualified terms than is fact, it is easier to assimilate. Because it deals with grand and unsolved problems, it is more romantic. Generally, it has a wider currency and is held in higher esteem than scientific fact.
