Personality: Ami is kind, modest and sweet. She hates to stand out and the last thing she'd want to do is offend someone. Or at least that's what she wants you to think. Klutzy and quick to take the blame for the problems she causes in others, she's the very definition of pure. She's cute and polite, and just a little bit airheaded.
Or at least that's what she'd like you to think. She puts on her cute facade to get attention, but around those she doesn't care about, mostly Taiga, she lets her true face show. She's selfish, blunt, rude. If there's nothing in it for her, no attention or prize to gain at the end, she's not interested. She is usually somewhat harmless, seeking attention and getting it, but if you scare her or upset her, the claws come out. She will find your weak spot and exploit it for all it's worth. Even if you don't upset her, she might do little things. Flirt with your boyfriend, spill your secrets, point out your problems in joking ways. She hides it all under her facade because no one loves a selfish or rude girl.
It seems as if her objective is to get as much attention from as many people as possible. Admiration from women, crushes and outright desire from men. A wink, a brush of the hand, leaning over just a little too much, she skirts the line of subtlety in her flirtations, always erring a little too much on the side of obvious. With girls she plays up her 'cute' flaws and acts as if her strengths are no big deal. She loves to stand out, be the one everyone is looking at and the one they want to befriend. She's not a bad person persay, just of a egotist. She has fears and problems just like anyone else, from a stalker that forces her to hide the face she loves to show off to a crush on Ryuuji she knows will go nowhere.
Ironically, a typically 'cutesy' habit of most Japanese girls is reversed in Ami. She refers to herself as 'Ami-chan' instead of I when she is not being cute, when she is being blunt and rude, to make up for the fact that she knows what she is saying is clashing with her image. Essentially she'll be cute in whatever way possible no matter what side she's showing.
As the series progresses, her sides merge a little. She's a little more blunt around her friends, a little less harsh in her criticisms of those who know her true self. Her genuine affection for her friends is not shown in her words but acts. She pushes them to examine why they do things and makes them realize their true feelings. She's exceedingly perceptive of others feelings and the way they interact with each other. While truly liking Ryuuji, she pushes him and Taiga together, forcing them to see what was obvious to everyone all along.
Ami is complicated, wanting the best for those close to her even as she teases and torments them and sometimes because of that. Of course the mass adoring public is still there for her kicks and to soothe her ego but there is definitely a divide between 'my world' and 'everyone else' by the end of the series. She even stays after her intended amount of time to see her friends and their tangled relationships through to the end. It's still all a little selfish, pushing her friends in to what 'she' thinks is best, but her intentions are usually the best.
