After a couple of viewings of Dead Man's Chest, I've gotten some fic writing inspiration for Jack and Bill (because wow chemisty). I do have a few questions on canon before I start if that's ok. I guess there might be a PotC canon community somewhere around but I haven't been able to find it. Feel free to point me in the right direction if you don' ( Read more... )

I think the name pre-dated the mutiny. Remember in Curse of the Black Pearl, when Will is hearing the story of his father's death... "They strapped a canon to old Bootstrap's bootstraps." And they giggle over it. It doesn't seem like it'd be a funny pun unless he had the name beforehand. And it seems like they would've mentioned that's where he got the name Bootstrap from; but it also seems really odd to give a nickname to someone post mortem.

And I think I remember Jack using the nickname. Doesn't mean he wouldn't call him Bill sometimes, though.

The mutiny-- I don't think he was a co-conspirator or anything. I think he just kind of got swept along and was too afraid to do anything. It's not clear whether he was sunk at the same time Jack was put ashore, or if he was grumbling about it afterwards and Barbosa made an example out of him. They say, "It never sat right with Bootstrap, what they did to Jack, what with the mutiny and all." It sounds like he spoke up much later, but who knows.

Jack's first line to Bill in DMC is "Bootstrap? Bill Turner?". So, he uses the nickname, and it's most likely that the nickname was given to Bill before his watery 'death'. Jack also uses the nickname when talking to Will about his father in the first movie. If the nickname hadn't been given to Bill before his death, Jack wouldn't have known about it, because he was mutinied upon before that. Hope that helps.

I always imagined that he got the nickname for being such an honorable man - 'pulled himself up by his bootstraps, Bill did,' etc. And it stuck. Or something like that :)

In the mutiny, all we really know is that he 'stood up for' Jack. And paid for it.

OMG, kiwi from hell, in addition to MSTs, you like Jack/Bootstrap TOO? I think I love you.

I have nothing useful to add, except that I totally agree with you regarding the wow chemistry. Doesn't hurt that I think Stellan Skarsgard is teh sex (even with barnacles).
