I hate to tell you...but it depends on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers put size numbers on them that are one to two sizes bigger than they actually are, and some do the opposite. American Apparel is one company that makes their products 1 - 2 sizes smaller than the marked size.
Get a fabric (as in used for sewing) tape measure out and measure yourself around the waist, hip, and DOWN the inseam leg length (crotch to ankle!), then convert those measurements to inches and look for those instead of 'size whatever'.
I would also not recommend buying clothes on eBay at all because what are you going to do if they don't fit, smell bad/have stains, etc? It can be a pain in the ass to return things, especially if the seller won't cooperate and you have to open a dispute with eBay or PayPal. And since you don't know what size you are with regards to 'American sizes' its likely you're going to have to return one or several until you get one that fits.
