Another incendiary "open letter" to my parents...seeing if I can push them to respond. I think, sometimes, that I enjoy pushing their buttons...and then other times, I feel it's my obligation to push the envelop with their belief system because it is about civil rights.

From a very early age, my parents taught me about respect for other people and spoke out against racism and intolerance. And yet, the older they get, the more they listen to and regurgitate conservative propaganda that is decidedly intolerant.

I sometimes ask myself if these are the same people who raised me. I try to remind them sometimes about the things they taught me, but I'm not sure how to make them less blind. My sister tries the incendiary approach, but it only causes more resistance. I just keep the dialog open, keeping things logical and trying not to be intolerant of them in return.

On a side note, I wonder if you've seen this. It might be a topic for a new blog entry:

Personally, I think the man is way too calm and logical for someone who just lost his husband, but everyone copes in his own way.
