Last time I was having my OH-MY-GOD-I-CAN'T-EVEN-MOVE back pain, my doctor gave me a bunch of pain meds, but said, "I can't really do anything for you - go to acupuncture." She then wrote out a referral for something called Tens Unit (electric stim) and then some stuff that I can't read because it's in doctor scrawl.

Since the intense pain subsided to the minor chronic pain, I still have that referral, still nervous about going. It's really the combination of two things, each of which I could probably handle on its own: a) needles and b) lying still with nothing to do for a long period of time.

But everyone I know who has done it (including my referring doctor) swears its effective... I just haven't worked up the courage yet. How much courage does it take?

For me, it was a medium-low amount of courage, more than required for something new that I want to do, like a new yoga class, but less than something new that I don't want to do, like find a new dentist.
