Couple of thoughts on a Sunday morning

I have noticed that when walking down a long hallway people tend to stick to the right side. I've asked quite a few people why they do it and they, like me, do not know except that it's the way they've always done it. Now I know we also drive on the right side of the road here in the colonies so if walking is an extension of our driving habits then ( Read more... )

Wow...guess it takes all kinds! I had one guy whose LJ name was gender ambiguous along with his bio, pics, etc. I made the mistake of thinking he was a she for some reason but luckily never put my foot in my mouth about it before I found out.

Another random question: have you ever had someone on your friends list that you assumed was one gender only to be surprised later to find out they were the opposite?

Twice. The first case was simply not knowing. The second was when a friend who was surprised by it him herself. ;-)

Often, the reason for sticking to the right side is simply ingrained in us because of grade school. Even my grandmother said that when she went into higher schools (she went to a one room elementary school) that when they walked down the halls, they were told to walk on the right. That way, classes and people didn't run into each other. Thinking back on it, from Kindergarten on, I was always told to walk on the right side of the hallways.

Just how I see it, anyway. And on my friends list, nope. I tend to know most people I put on there.

That seems to be the consensus - that we were all taught in school to stick to the right side and it follows us into adulthood.

there have been several people on my f-list that I was unsure of their gender. But with the exception of one, I found out eventually if they were male or female. One, however, still eludes me. I feel like it should be obvious but (s)he has been very careful all these years about revealing it. I suppose I could ask, but after 4 years??? I mean, really! LOL

Here in Georgia, I have noticed that the "entrance" and "exit" doors are backwards on many businesses. (Looking at the front of the store, the entrance should be on the right, the exit on the left) I think they do that in case of a robbery and the stupid robber thinks (s)he might be running out the exit and SPLAT! right into the entrance door knocking themselves out until the police show up.... either that or they are "relly stoopid" up here in Hicksville, Georgia.

That is wild that he/she wouldn't want people to know.

And I agree about the exit/entrance doors. We have the same thing here in some places and it's very confusing.

I think it does have something to do with etiquette ... I was taught to always ride my bike with the flow of travel ...I was taught to walk where traffic would be coming toward me ... to see what was coming at me, without impeding progress ..

I have one friend who I assumed was male, but turned out to be female. It made no difference, was simply a pleasant surprise. I've had the same surprise with straight vs gay. Again, it was simply a pleasant surprise that the friend was straight.

It may go back to the old days when right-handedness was considered "normal" and teachers tried to change lefties into righties.
