I simply don't see the POINT of the Spanish past tense system. It's confusing and made to drive learners mad. Every time I feel like I'm starting to get it, I discover new cases of "WTF-WHY-ARE-YOU-USING-THIS-FORM-NOW?"
Reading your opinion on this kind of makes me a bit scared. Because to me you're the language expert, and if the Spanish past tense system manages to confuse the hell out of YOU, I don't know if I'll ever be able to deal with it. O_O
Unfortunately I don't know any songs about German word order, and I suppose that if it weren't my mother tongue, then German would drive me mad too! I have great respect for everyone who decides to learn it!
I know I had some notes about irregular verbs somewhere... if you give me some time (and I find said notes), I'll share that with you. It was a rather simple way of explaining the changes in irregular verbs. In the meantime, this might be of help. It tells you which letters change depending on the first syllable of each verb. Feel free to ask me any questions. :)
Oh, by the way, I got your postcard today! Very well written, I might add. :D I'll post mine tomorrow. ;)
If it's any consolation... I don't think I managed to really understand/use the past-tense distinctions until I was about 15. (I started learning Spanish when I was 8.) The only solution is "more Spanish!", though. But irregular forms aren't so bad, if I remember correctly - you just have to memorize the basic pattern for each type.
(She says, remembering that only last weekend she tried to get imperfect/preterite distinctions into her students' heads. I feel your pain, from the other side!)
