Teaching others to shoot

Jul 22, 2006 01:09

I spent this past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in a classroom at the GOAL Foundation and on the range at the Worcester Pistol and Rifle Club.  Why did I take a day off work and spend a beautiful weekend indoors?  I was taking an NRA Instructor course so I could learn to teach others to shoot.

Why I took the course... )

Schweet!

I'm sure you'll be much better than one of the guys from my pistol course (bad teeth, lots of tattoos, lots of military-insignia pins; straight out of "Apocalypse Now." Kinda scary.).

But yeah, sign me (and MT) up! :D

Can you recommend a good intro shooting class? I've been toying with taking one since i heard some folks talking about the intro class for women last year. i've never seen, held, or shot a gun, and i'm not sure where to begin...

thanks!

If you're ultimately interested in getting a license then I'd recommend the folks who ran the course I just took: the GOAL Foundation. They're running the next basic pistol class on August 1st. Jon Green, GOAL's director of education and training, is a phenomenal teacher.

If you're more interested in a brief intro with more shooting and less classroom time then I'd recommend GOAL's Women on Target. There's one more session this year on September 16th. This is what motomuffin took. It covers pistol, rifle, and shotgun although in less depth than the basic pistol class.

The basic pistol class costs money and is best if you plan on continuing shooting. It's more classroom time with some range time. The Women on Target clinic is more of a hands-on sampler with an optional classroom section at the end. It's also free. There's nothing that says you can't take both. ;-)
