So it's been quite some time since I last posted. Apologies to those who have come to rely upon my general musings to provide them with a modicum of entertainment, procrastination and a good excuse to wreck their diminishing eyesight ( Read more... )

The weather is indeed freakish.
We got two extraordinary loud claps of thunder over east, but no rain. Weirdness.

Mathematically speaking, there are an infinite number of possibilities for new music, just as it is true that any number can be divided an infinite number of times. Half of 0.5, etc... Though our hearing ability is limited, so it's possible we will hit a brick wall eventually.

Of course, as the pool of songs grows, there will be more and more songs that will sound similar -- but this is simply a matter of degree. While now we might expect 70% differentiation between songs, in ten years we might expect 60%. Listen to a genre you're unfamiliar with, and it will tend to all sound the same. That's mostly because your ears have become tuned to the innovations in metal music, but not to the innovations in rap music. As long as we stay involved in music, our senses will tend to notice the innovations made in the next ten or twenty years, and match the speed of change.

But probably not you. More likely it'll be your children who are in tune with that music, while you whinge about it being just noise that sounds the same.

You raise a pretty good point.

Though the thought of whining about music becoming just "noise of those damned kids with their long hair, etc." scares me a little.

I think the main reason that adults tend to fall behind is because their music has a lot of positive associations, due to memories of their youth, and new genres simply can't compete with that.

Still, I imagine an open mind would count for a lot.

Mm, partly why I do try new music at every opportunity I get. Mind you though, I do avoid Country & Western music at every opportunity. So I guess it could be said that I have a partially open mind.
