In this sense, is bullshit more the pursuit of things that don't matter or things that are stupid?

(And I just got to the point in the BBQ song where it wins on both points by saying 'Florida' and putting up a picture of California.)

I would go with the former. Some of the bullshit is clearly the product of extensive intellectual endeavor.
