Carotid Artery Surgery??

Jun 25, 2012 09:35

Yesterday the phone rang exceptionally early. I grabbed it in a state of expatriate freak-out, expecting news of a car accident or something. It was my mother, who's usually excellent about this sort of thing. Turns out that she is going to be having carotid artery-clearing surgery in the very near future. Her carotid arteries are 90% occluded, and ( Read more... )

I have no experience with this. Nonetheless, I'm thinking of you and your mother and wishing you both the best of luck.

Not for some years. I'm a couple of hours away, if that helps.

*hugs* I think a lot of the info online is outdated because of the signal to noise ratio. My sis is a cardiologist, and it's pretty routine for her. She does 1 every other day practically and 2 when she's on call (twice a week) or if one of her patients has a heart attack. Even on 3 hours of sleep she hasn't lost a patient during surgery. Modern technology makes a huge difference.

Side note: What they do with their life after the surgery is another matter. It frustrates her to no end to know that she's saving people who will go right back to their old habits so make sure to get on your mom's case after she recovers. It's usually a sign of other problems to come, liver damage or what not from similar lifestyle problems.

Btw look up angioplasty instead. If they didn't rush her to the ER then it's probably what they'll do.

Knock on wood, things will go well. Endarterectomy is a pretty routine surgery these days.

Of course! It's different when it's one of your family members. And my father's experience shows that even a 'safe, routine" surgery has real risks. They don't make you sign those consent forms for nothing.

Here's hoping your mother sails through the procedure!

I'm a bit late to the "party" on this one, so I'll just chime in to offer best wishes!
