A drabble I wrote for Maderr, featuring Deyllgo, the Black Dragon.
---
It was bound to happen sooner rather than later, given a certain black dragon's obsession with making certain his precious Wind Lord was safe at all times, but no one was expecting it when it did finally occur. Deyllgo had known subconsciously since they'd taken up residence in the Temnia royal palace that his Lord Aeynanyi Sirlennu and the human ruler were more than just 'friends.' He'd gritted his teeth and tried very hard not to growl every time the impudent human had touched Lord Aeynanyi, did his best to warn him away at every opportunity despite his lord's orders, and generally terrorized the entire palace with his temper.
The final straw, such as it was, came when Lord Aeynanyi and the human leader were late for the morning meal. Given that the humans still weren't entirely comfortable with the idea of dragons freely roaming about their palace and their land, Deyllgo felt quite justified in walking into the rooms where his lord slept to ascertain his safety. What he wasn't prepared for was the sight that greeted him upon his arrival.
Lord Aeynanyi Sirlennu and his human pet were both there, the human sprawled on his back on the large sleeping pad - bed - thing, his hands clutching Lord Aeynanyi's knees, while Aeynanyi was... Aeynanyi was...
Deyllgo's furious snarl made the human jump and jerk his head to stare, face turning almost as red as Ruadh's hair, though Lord Aeynanyi merely looked over at him with a slight little smile and politely asked, "Deyllgo, would you mind please waiting outside?"
He wanted to protest, wanted to roar out his fury and tear out the disrespectful human's throat for desecrating his lord in such a way, but all of that was denied him. Instead, he merely nodded stiffly and stalked back out, terrifying two servants who had been cleaning. He ruthlessly slashed at the wall, feeling the wood shred satisfyingly beneath his claws.
A footman who'd been coming around a corner took one look and bolted the other direction. It made him feel a little bit better. Not much, but a little.
Several minutes later the door clicked open and Lord Aeynanyi stepped out, his graceful body shrouded by infernal human clothing the name of which he couldn't remember. Rogh? Road? No, robe.
"Deyllgo."
Deyllgo lowered his head respectfully. "My lord..."
Aeynanyi sighed softly and placed a hand on Deyllgo's arm. "It is my choice, Deyllgo. I ask this of him, and he gives me pleasure with his actions. It is no disrespect to me if it is what I desire."
"I..." Deyllgo growled in frustration and was shamed to hear a low whine in the sound. "I know that, my lord, I just... he... you..." Snarling again, he reduced another chunk of wall paneling to splinters.
Aeynanyi regarded the damage neutrally, then looked back up at Deyllgo. "Because of my position, I can never be amongst equals like you or any of the others. With Mirofal I can love and be loved, and there is no rank or responsibility to stand between us." He smiled, somewhat sadly. "I love you all dearly, my friends, my people, but sometimes... sometimes the role of the Wind Lord is a very lonely one. You of all people, I think, can understand that part of me."
The gnawing, aching loneliness. Oh yes, Deyllgo understood it all too well. It was not something he would wish upon anyone, much less his beloved lord. It only irked him that it was a human who dared... but he also saw why it could not be a dragon. Respect and reverence would always color any love a dragon dared to give. Would always put distance between them.
Deyllgo sighed softly. "Forgive me, my lord."
Aeynanyi smiled and withdrew his hand, leaving a lingering impression of warmth and a faint tingling sensation. "Forgiven. Though I do suggest that next time I am late, you knock first. It is a human custom which prevents such... awkward situations."
More stupid human customs. First clothes, now this? He was going to wind up more human than dragon. How depressing.
"Yes, my lord." Deyllgo sighed again and began making plans to go get into a fight. There was nothing quite like a little blood and entrails to make a day fathoms better.
