Observations about the Harry Potter universe

Right now I'm into Harry Potter stories, there is a lot of good work in fanfiction. Some of it gives the original books a run for the money.

Many people list their favorite and not so favorite characters. I'm not really sure I have favorites. Every character has things I like and dislike about them. except for maybe Hedwig and Crookshanks. So maybe ( Read more... )

Hi. I really enjoyed your post. You make many points that I have also thought of. I think I have spotted one error, though. You quote Ron as saying that "there isn't a witch or wizard that went bad that wasn't in Slytherin." While I don't have a copy of PS here to consult, I'm quite sure it was Hagrid who said that. (The next sentence applies much better to Hagrid as well.)

(And re Hagrid: You left out the part where, soon after we meet him, he retaliates for an insult to someone not even present by attacking the child of the person who voiced it. That never bothered me when I was a child myself, but as an adult I find it very jarring that a character we are clearly supposed to like is introduced that way.)

P. S. Where can I find your fanfic?

Good list of observations!

I've been wondering what on earth Dumbledore wrote in that letter. "Dear Mrs. Dursley, I regret to inform you that yesterday your sister and her husband were murdered by a wizard terrorist. However, your nephew, Harry James Potter (attached), Harry somehow magically vaporized his would-be murderer and also partially blew up the house. He will be in your charge until he comes of age. I do hope Lord Voldemort's followers don't track him down and murder him along with you and your entire family. Sincerely, Albus Percival Brian Wulfric Dumbledore and my many titles." I mean... there is no excuse for what the Dursleys did, but how many people would react well to living in fear every day that their nephew could blow up them and their house, or that unstoppable magical killers would hunt them down? And he just merrily dropped the Dursleys in that horror and left them to stew in it for ten years? Did he expect them to abuse Harry, or did he intend them to ( ... )
