João has a white and a black personality. His white persona is that of a regular vagabond of Portuguese nationality. Orphaned at a very young age and with no known family, he learned to live off the streets through stealing, shop-lifting, pick-pocketing and cheating at gambling. Along the way he met three other people; Eneas, Carlos & Maureo, which were soon regarded as friends. The four traveled, taking random jobs such as mining work along with their immoral activities.
At some point in time João developed this extremely sadistic personality, his black side, which included joining a sect believing themselves to be the Noah Clan; descendants of the Noah in the bible meant to wipe out humanity by once again causing the three days of darkness. While he regards the gang of vagabonds as his friends, the sect members would also be what he considers family which he never had. Growing delusional and believing the claims of this sect, he began leading a double-life. The delusions grew worse over time and he began perceiving himself as 'Tyki Mikk' and even began to think his friends had different names.
He's responsible for the murder of two individuals that followed 'the fake God', whom he killed on orders from who he believed to be the Millennium Earl (the presumed leader of this sect). He believed these people to be 'Exorcists' and their enemies.
He regards his two personalities as two completely separate lives. His friends didn't knew any better than João having a part-time job, until he was caught for the formerly mentioned murders. Police was involved, and it became clear that João was mentally ill. His three friends admitted him in Landels Institute hoping that he'd recover and return to the João they knew.
