Truthfully, I haven't touched any tutorials myself. I've been taught a little about Photoshop so I'm applying what I've learnt to what there is in GIMP. I don't really play around much with the icons, so that would explain why most of them are really simple. I'd love to do layering with text like what you see on your Renji icon, but my GIMP crashes whenever I try text stuff, so I can only copy and paste from somewhere else (aka paint) for text. XD I'm not that good at cleaning/rendering as well, so some times I don't bother or just crop the stuff out.
Mind sharing the links? I'll have a look and get back to you. ^^ Have you tried using any image/drawing programs before? (Also, you do get the terms in the above paragraph?) That way I know how much you know, so I can see how basic or advanced a tutorial would fit you.
Wow no wonder you're tired - all that eye strain. They are very nice. Looking at them as a set, I find that any icon with a bottom left to upper right diagonal is more interesting than the others, where the heads are merely next to one another. It has more energy and a sense of movement (34,42) An opposite diagonal is better than none at all, but it has a quieter feeling to it (1, 37). Do you perceive that as well? One issue: if most people put their icon on the upper right, that active diagonal usually faces away from the rest of the text, so I think finding "active" pictures that "look" at the reader will be a special challenge. If you look at Rii's Kaien icon, it looks at the text but it's static. Not much diagonal there. The active part comes from the smile, and from the fact that it's cropped so that he seems "too big to fit his space".
I really like icon no. 37. Try cropping it in different ways and see if you can alter the mood and energy level it projects. Nice work...I really should learn to use Gimp...you're good at it!
Thanks for the analysis. The icons with diagonals are indeed more interesting than those without. Didn't really notice it myself. Rii's Kaien icon is awesome.. Haven't seen any better fanart for Kaien yet. You're also very right in that finding icons that look at the reader are hard.
For icons, I tend to do them based on gut feeling more than anything else, and for some reason, I don't really like incomplete people, though I understand how it can work as an effect and I am/will be trying out more of it. I haven't really been using much of GIMP though, so... XD I'll play around with #37 when I have the time. ^^
