I am so sick of seeing people write "you (general you)" in their posts.

The word you are looking for is 'one'. USE IT!

I think the general mindset these days is that using "one" that way is incredibly wanky. I'm far more anal than most people about proper grammar, but even I feel like I have a stick up my arse when I use "one" in most situations. I still do it if formal grammar is important in what I'm writing... but that's pretty much just restricted to essays. For everything else (with the occasional exception of conversations where I'm trying to intellectually one-up someone, haha), I think "you" is very standard informal English.

Oh sure, I have no problem with people using the general 'you'. I just hate it when people have to point out that they are using it.

IMO, you should either make your tone clear enough that you don't need to point it out, or use 'one'.

Because pointing it out shits me. And the entire world exists for me pleasure, you see. ;P

Oh yeah, I can definitely agree with that (the pointing it out part :P).

And Durry's comment below reminds me, have you ever seen the movie Idiocracy?

Oh wow, I missed the point of your post. People actually write "you (general you)"?

That's crazy!

Judging by the last couple of hundred years of english language evolution, I'd say it is a matter of time before the "you" becomes "U", and is taught that way.
