Backwards Character Generation

So I am enrolling in a new D&D 4e campaign. Now, ever since I started playing Werewolf in High School, I've been a mite bit snotty about the superiority of making a setting trump system, and stats come after character development and history, tweaking the class to the character. I have done this before; it works really well. You can end up with an interesting character that you never would have come up with going at in from the other direction

I go back and forth...sometimes a character pops into my head fully-formed, and then I build their stats to fit the concept. Other times I don't have the same inspiration so I look at what's cool and build a character around it. The good news is - I've had great successes with both techniques.
