Reading

Spring break has started. I got to spend a decent chunk of time reading for pleasure on campus today, in the sun. One of my profs saw me reading, though, and said, "Oh, I remember pleasure reading." I can't decide whether she was being honest or melodramatic ( Read more... )

Ha, she was being a bit of both. I rarely have time for pleasure reading thanks to writing, lecture prep, grading, and just plan exhaustion. There is the possibility this might change in the future once the courses I teach become more regular and/or I stop getting new classes every semester. Of course if it was really important to me, I could 'make' time for it.

Audiobooks only. While I leave time for cooking, gaming, keeping up with friends online, and going to parties/events on occasion, if I have additional time when I am lucid enough to read, I'm lucid enough to be reading something relevant to work. That could just be a matter of priorities- I have no problem cooking complicated meals that take an hour or more to prepare even on weeknights (that's when I relax).

That being said, I LOVE audiobooks. I listen to them mostly while I'm cooking, actually. There is quite a range of options on audible- I really have to prioritize. This form of multitasking keeps me literate even when I choose not to spare the time to read a physical book.

Good luck!

Pretty much none, except on winter break (spring break is for working, at least this year). I expect to read somewhat more over summer break, but it's basically a trade-off between how much do I want to read for pleasure vs potentially get another publication on my CV? Guess what usually wins these days...

I'll read for pleasure again regularly when I get tenure.

Also, I was once an extremely avid reader, for what it's worth. I just don't have the mental energy left over most of the time these days.
