At night, she would dream.
The days were long. It was hard, putting on the appearance of happiness. Counting down the hours left of sunlight, she would smile.
In her dreams, she was in control. No pretending, acting, no false smiles. There was no need. She was in full control.
In her dreams, she was wherever, whenever, whoever she wanted to be. At first it gave her comfort. To stand at the top of a mountain, feeling fingers of wind ruffle through her hair, or sit by a raging river, ice cold water droplets showering her. But it wasn't what she wanted.
Then she found it. Deep in her heart, hidden behind a great stone wall, it was. She tore the wall down, brick by brick, and found it.
Now, she was always herself. Perhaps a little more beautiful, perhaps a little thinner, but still herself. Still Val Lanier.
And he was always there with her. Always by her side, always an arm around her waist. Always playing with the long strands of her hair, always playing on his guitar, just for her. Never playing with her heart.
And she felt happy, deliriously so. In dreams blond became brunette, blue became hazel, smile became smirk. Boyfriend became friend. Friend became boyfriend. Smooth fingertips tracing the side of her waist became calloused ones, tracing the side of her cheek. Rides in a light blue car became rides on the back of a motorcycle. Soft rock notes from the CD player became heavy metal guitar riffs, smooth voices became rough ones, screaming, choking.
And she felt deliriously happy.
But then she would wake, and it would be morning.
And daylight would once again be there, surrounding her.
And brunette would become blond, and hazel would become blue and boyfriend would once again be friend, and friend would become boyfriend.
And until the next time she lay down in her bed, she would forget what calloused fingertips upon her skin felt like.
