Summary: Ola can't pinpoint exactly when or how the rumors started.
Ola can't pinpoint exactly when or how the rumors started, or which tabloid first put them into print in a side column of the entertainment section. They were crude, suggesting things that he would never have thought of otherwise, and it was hard to laugh them off because Måns had also heard, and Måns liked to take things that were said about him - about them - a little more seriously than Ola chose to do.
The TV4 producers said it was Ola's fault, because he should never have come back to the show after he was voted off, should never have sat in the audience and cheered and clapped as Måns took the stage. Måns said the notion was stupid, and that he would never have had it any other way; that Ola was his friend and that it had meant everything. And then he looked at Ola and Ola had to turn away, because Måns' eyes shifted to reveal so much more than Ola wanted - wants - to know.
The record label honchos call an emergency meeting, and decide that Måns should take his girlfriend out to dinner more often, should make sure they're seen together. Ola should talk more about soccer, because apparently that's something that will erase his lean frame and make people see that he's an athlete and not a young, blond boy who likes to delicately wrap his arms around anyone who asks for a hug (Ola resents that description, but Måns only smiles).
Eventually, though only three weeks after Ola left, Måns is voted off the show as well. He holds an interview which Ola later reads, wherein he emphasizes a special bond with Sebastian, and Ola swallows hard and doesn't read beyond that paragraph. At the final show, the rocker smiles at him, and Ola only merely returns it, trying to find solace in Måns' gaze from across the room as Sebastian throws an arm around Ola's shoulders and pats him on the back.
He asks Måns later, when they're sitting alone on the edge of the stage amidst small strips of colored paper and flower petals, about the interview, even though he hasn't meant to and the words just rolls off his tongue before he has a chance to stop them. Måns smiles dimly, and Ola waits for an answer that comes eventually, when Måns finally forces it out from between his teeth.
No, of course Sebastian's his best friend.
And Ola tries to not look away and set in motion the ridiculous lovers' quarrel the tabloids painted up in their extra thick Saturday editions. Instead, he smiles and makes a joke about feeling rejected - it stings less when its from his own lips - and Måns looks surprised and like he thought that Ola knew, thought Ola understood.
'Sebastian's his best friend,' he says, giving away the title as if it meant nothing. 'But you... You're everything.'
And Ola wonders how the rumors could be so wrong, yet so right.
